Why did they call it “Almost Famous”

Almost Famous implies a tragic movie, one where they failed or didn’t make it.

But at the end, the band made it ... They got the cover of Rolling Stone, they continue to tour, the band didn’t split.

The kid got his story published and verified, so “Almost Famous” isn’t a reference to him.

Penny goes to Morocco, so she got a good ending. She didn’t have aspirations to be famous, so can you apply “Almost Famous” to her?

It seems that movie’s title doesn’t accord with the happy ending.

Even at the end the band are just starting to make it. I wouldn't call them officially famous yet. Anyway, most of the film deals with the band establishing themselves and William trying to write the story. So I think the "Almost" part works well.

It was the name of the tour. On the front of the bus, it read "Almost Famous-Tour 73".
