i like this film but i think paul should have made it instead.

I agree with that, it’s still a good film though but I think Verhoeven would have done it better. Also, I feel like this movie was made 5, maybe even 10 years too early, given the special effects demands of the film, they’re borderline on not aging too well.

I'm not sure. I love Total Recall and feel Verhoeven's cheesy tone suited that film well, and although Verhoeven can do serious and do it well (Black Book, which funnily enough was the board I just so happened to come from to see this post), I reckon he would have gone in a more cheesy direction with this film than Spielberg did. The somewhat more cheesy parts of this film were already the ones I wasn't so keen on i.e. John Anderton's rapport with his colleague's during the chase scene.

At the same time, I also wouldn't have put it past Verhoeven to have done a good job with it. Given the effects in Starship Troopers, I have no doubt visually it would have looked great for one thing.
