Fire on the mountain

Why not build a fire at the top of that mountain so the ships could see it? After spotting a fire every time they pass, they might have sent someone to investigate eventually.

It's been stated elsewhere, that there are 1000s of "desert islands" out there, some inhabited, some not. From miles away, ship occupants would not know if that island was occupied or not. A "fire on the mountain" on a small island is nothing of concern to a passing ship.

not to mention how hard it would be to keep that fire burning... imagine carrying woods on top of the mounatin, every day, every night... and we only see one ship going by...
