Where did he go for the 4 weeks since he was rescued?

When the barge ship finally found him he was skinny, he was sunburned and brown, weak, and his hair was bleached blonde from the sun.
Then we see him on a plane going back home looking better than he did prior to his ordeal. The caption said it was only four weeks later. How did he gain all the weight back, and turn fair again, his hair is suddenly black again, and he actually looks better now than he did before the plane crashed! What happened to all that sun damage? It wouldn't disappear in four weeks!
And where was he staying in those four weeks and why? Why not get home right away?

Probably took some time for the boat to reach shore, wherever that was exactly, and then for him to get in touch with FedEx and whatnot and start to reintegrate back in to civilization. The barge that picked him up was probably on some sort of schedule but I'm sure they helped him out some with this and that.

But what happened to the shriveled up, sun damaged Chuck? He looked like he had come back from a spa vacation instead of a four year ordeal with no sunscreen and little food.

reply

They probably took him to a US hospital for treatment where he was close to unconscious for weeks.

Agree with you. He was probably on IV fluids for the first while, slowly working back up to solid food. He was given a haircut, and as well, he lost his tan. I lose my tan 4 weeks after I come back from a sunny vacation so it's not unheard of.

BUT in reality
... what I am sure happened was that the scenes after his rescue were filmed first. They halted filming for 6 months so Tom Hanks could lose the weight to film the survival scenes on the island.

I agree. It would've taken the ship some amount of time to get to it's destination. Then he would be hospitalized for a little while. Definitely putting him on an IV, checking for any possible diseases or infections he could've had, getting him cleaned up (everywhere). I mean he couldn't regularly shower or brush his teeth for over 4 years. I'm sure he had some issues that had to be taken care of. Keep in mind when he's still on the island, we can see his teeth and how decayed and bad they look. Although they don't focus too much on his mouth after he's rescued, you can see that his teeth are back to looking relatively normal, which I'm sure also would've taken some time.

Actually if I remember correctly they took a break from filming for him to lose the weight. The first scenes in the movie were filmed first, then he lost the weight and grew the beard and hair out long enough to add extensions. Then they filmed the four years later part and the ending. I think Helen hunt may have actually gained a few pounds for the same reason, making her look more post baby mommish at the end.

True and the crew took that time to film the Harrison Ford movie, What Lies Beneath

reply

Yes, most likely the filming sequence. Hanks or the film company may have felt it was not critical to have the gaunt look at that stage of his ordeal. Location shooting is often dictated by cost so they may have elected to get all the non island scenes done at one time.

During the end of the film, from the moment it says "Four Weeks Later" and he's on the airplane headed for Tennessee, he's still whip thin. Look at him in the first section of the film, he's pudgy, 30 pounds overweight. During the final sequences he's still very, very thin. Look at the final scene, he's still incredibly thin.

Hanks is amazing in this film.

According to the Wiki page, there were two gaps in production:

After (the first third) of the film was shot, production was paused so he could lose the weight and grow his hair and beard to look like he had been living on the island for years. Another four-month production halt preceded the filming of the return scenes.

He was likely getting medical care and quarantined to make sure he didn't catch any contagious disease that he could bring back and spread to the population.

I woke up this way...

He went on a bender and got laid...at least that's what I'd do after 4 years marooned

reply

Yes I believe that would be the logical thing to do

As others pointed out, he was probably under constant medical care. He had been through a hell of an ordeal.

Go and rewatch. He actually has shades of blonde bleached hair at the top of his short hair cut. They were left there after his hair was cut. Good job from make up department. His hair was bleached blonde from the sun from the outside. Near the head it wasnt since it was always cowered with hair. So when they cut it it was natural color and it has grown after 4 weeks.

But they should have give him sun tan probably. He would not lose all that suntan that quickly.

Weight could be back easily since people start eating after starving.

He was staying in the hospital obviously.
