Great movie, but...(SPOILERS)

SPOILERS

Why did it have to end so abruptly? I feel it would have been better if it showed the parent's reaction afterwards and that of the student's more than it did. It would have been much longer, but better.

A seriously great movie though.

yeh. i too thought that this movie is way too short. and also i think that was the only way for happy-ending in this movie - just to end it somewhere in the half of the story.

reply

you hit the probelm right in the head thats why i kinda didn't give it ten out of ten on my review of the film.

Moodysson could of written another twenty minutes onto the film without harming it. i give you some plot lines they could have taken

1) coming out the parents that would have been interesting especially with Agnes mother)

2)Elin meets up with her sister

3)The reaction of the school friends next day.

thats just a few i would have addressed but a lot of fans of F.A would disagree with us i'm afraid. it's still my favourite Moodysson film along with Together.

reply

I don't think it needed to be longer. It was great as it is.
How the friends and Elins sister would react is not really interesting, because I allready know that.

The whole point was Elin learning to not let others' opinions steer her life the wrong way. Once she figures that out the reactions of the students and parents doesn't matter anymore so why would the filmmaker undermine the message of the movie. Anything further would just dilute it.

Okay so I just rewatched the film, and it does sort of show Agnes's mom's reaction. Remember her brother told their mom about the rumor that Agnes was a lesbian? Then the mom looked on Agnes's computer and saw all her diaries about Elin, so the mom knew. She also attempted to talk with Agnes about it but Agnes freaked out and threw her out of the room. I guess I would have liked to see some of the reactions more, but only really of Jessica, since I can already fathom what the other students were thinking. Plus we did get the short scene where Elin revealed the relationship and they all looked dumbfounded. I actually really like the end scene though. It's cute yet awkward and seems realistic of the two. Then it's sort of full circle with the chocolate milk. I think the main weakness in the film is the first part of the second half. The first half is great and keeps my attention the entire time, but I lose it a little during the time where Elin's dating Johan. It would have been better with some added Agnes scenes there because she barely has any scenes then. Overall though I think this movie is really good. At first when I watched it I wasn't thinking much, but then I couldn't get it out of my mind so I rewatched it and I just loved it so much more. I feel it's a great portrayal of youth, love, and many other things. Great movie that I have barely anything to complain about (but definitely understand where others are coming from).

We also see Elin trying to tell her mother about being a lesbian while they're watching tv.
Something like:
Elin: Mum, I'm a lesbian.
Mum: What?
E: Homosexual
M: looks oddly at her
E: Oh nevermind! I was only joking
E & M: continues to watch tv.

Elins mother was very realistic to me. I've seen so many parents (esp single parent) who think they're in control of what their kids are doing, and try to set some kind of rules, but in reality haven't got a clue about anything.

I think that's why the movie ends with Elin's self acceptance, that's what the movie is about not everyone else's acceptance. Even though Agnes' love for Elin is played as the main plot, as the movie evolves the growth and change seems to mostly sit with Elin's evolving awareness of self -acceptance of self and finally "coming out" as it were. The "chocolate milk" scenes (as it begins with a girl in termiol fighting over milk with her sister, and a settled girl at the end sharing milk with her possible lover) are just a symbolic bookend to this journey.

I think it ended at the right time. I just wish there was a second one or something, because i was left wanting more.

reply

No reason to go there

The movie was about elin and agnes. to make it longer and include more scenes with mom/friends etc. would be like a regular romantic comedy after the romantic scene at the end where the couple finally realizes they are in love/get together and then prolong the movie with scenes about friends family work etc. Like after the rain scene in 4 weddings or after the scene atop the empire state building in sleepless.

reply

Ending was quite odd. They walk out, then quickly cut to a very short, and strange sequence where they sit on a bed, and drink chocolate milk, and then boom-cut to credits. I don't understand what the purpose of this final scene was. I don't think there was any.

reply

The ending had loads of purpose. It shows the two girls finally being happy and at peace with themselves and with eachothers.

A very clever way to end it.

reply

I thought the ending was exactly what the movie was all about. In not showing the reactions of parents, friends etc. they emphasised the point that those reactions did not matter, it was all about the two girls, they didn't care what others thought anymore.

"The ending had loads of purpose. It shows the two girls finally being happy and at peace with themselves and with eachothers."

Yeah, it showed that girls were not nervous about other people. It showed they their nervous is between each other. I think it's great. I like the feeling that anything is possible that the ending conveys.

The coming out scene is also so great, having loads more scenes after that would ruin the impact. Plus, I don't think there would actually be much to show after that anyways.

Yeah, this movie feels way too short.

I think the running time is perfect, and the ending with that Chocolate Milk scene is the cherry on top of this fantastic film. The film at the end of the day is about Elin and Agnes and their story ends when they come out of that bathroom together in front of all the students and teachers, admitting their love to the world. It wasn't about the parents or the students think, I think that scene when Agnes and her mother arguing pretty much tells you what Agnes mother thinks. And her father seems to just want his daughter to be happy. With the students you know they will try to bully them but that Elin won't stand for their crap. But Moodysson isn't interest in that.

Plenty of great fan fiction out there from fans that you can read if you want the story to continue. Personal the film is perfect as it is.

reply

I agree. It's possible the film could have been slightly longer and still worked well, but to me that would mean adding a scene or two earlier on. The ending was perfect and I wouldn't have wanted them to continue past that point. Actually, it could have even ended slightly earlier, right when they came out of the bathroom.

reply

You could have ended it with them walking out of the bathroom and them just walking off. But we always kind of end on those type of scenes in Coming of Age high school films. But I think the Chocolate milk scene was a nice touch as you don't usually see what happens next and I like after such a big event in their lives they are still nervous teenagers still trying to figure it out.

reply

Yeah, it's a nice scene.

reply

It didn't really need the parents reaction, we kind of see that in the film that Agnes mom doesnt really know her daughter to well (like most parents) and is worried and her dad seems like he accept her no matter what. We know how the students will accept it already, they are bullying to Agnes throughout the film and some don't really care and some think it's cool.

The film is fine as it is. A nice running time under 90 minutes. Brilliant acting from both actresses (shame neither went on to have more success in the film industry) and from the smaller parts. Well written from Moodysson. One of the best coming of age films you are likely to see.
