I wish ...

"The Girl" had used an actual name, even if it was one that sounded suspicious or was clearly a pseudonym, like in the novel where she used Irene Adler. That would go a way to letting Corso and the viewer relate to her in a different way and making it not so clear for so long that she was supernatural.

I wish Polanski had chosen a girl with more sex appeal than Emmanuelle Seigner. Even an old maid like Lena Olin was more provocative. I'm an AC/DC fan, myself. And to tell you the truth, getting raped by the Devil sounds like a lot of fun. But if I'm going to burn in Hell for all eternity, I may as well get my money's worth.

"Livin' easy, livin' free
Season ticket on a one way ride
Askin' nothin', leave me be
Takin' everythin' in my stride
Don't need reason, don't need rhyme
Ain't nothin' that I'd rather do
Goin' down, party time
My friends are gonna be there too
I'm on the highway to hell"

I think Emmanuelle Seigner is very sexy in this. Even in the recent Venus in Fur, she's got tremendous sex appeal.

I'll have to agree with you here. Obviously they could have found someone better looking but that can be said regardless of who they cast. Emmanuelle looks gorgeous in this movie, especially all hot and sweaty at the end.

What a peculiar thing to say. If you died in the intervening time since you wrote that post I bet you are finding out that it's not as much fun as you thought it was going to be. LOL

OMG I actually can't believe your wish. I, on the contrary, find Emmanuelle to be the most fitting actress for this. She has that mystique that no other actress could've delivered better. I absolutely love the way she plays, portrays Devil's assistant. Pure perfection. Telfer is too seductive, too pretty, too sexy for this role, which would make the viewer too obsessed with the Girl.

Sorry, my comment above is in reply to user 'mligorio'.

I agree...the only one I could think of who might come close would be Nastassja Kinski...

reply

I agree. I found her perfectly cast. Loved her accent and minimal dialogue.

Adler in German means Eagle. Learned that from the Shining analysis vids (Typewriter brand Kubrick chose).

I prefer her as simply 'Green Eyes' or 'The Girl'. Her entire character is built upon mystery, this way it's maximized.

I loved the mystery of that character, too. I love how unsettling she is and how you're never sure exactly who's side she's on or what she's doing, right up until the very end (and even then there are a myriad of questions). Ninth Gate is a great movie for giving us, the audience, just enough to dig in, but not spoon feed us anything or talk down. It's great.
