Most Underrated Funny Line in the Movie

I watched this movie in a film class and found one line particularly hysterical, but found no one else seemed to be laughing. At the play reception, Ms. Cross goes up to Luke Wilson's character and says "I didn't expect to see you here, did Max send you an invitation?" and he replies "Yeah, and he told me to wear a tie."

It gets me just thinking about it.

I loved it when Herman told Max that one of his son's had given him a black eye but he didn't know which one because he couldn't tell them apart! I also loved the letter Dirk wrote to Max about Miss Cross and Herman's supposed antics.

"I'll show you the door"

"I might as well go out the window"

Idk why, but that line always had this certain humourous irony to it.

Max's response to his father's 'You're like one of those clipper ship captains. You're married to the sea.'

'Yes, that's true. But I've been out to sea for a long time.'

It doesn't crack me up in such a ha ha moment so much as a brilliant payoff for a great little exchange. Wes gives the moment a second to wash over for full effect.

"make it out to Ready Demolition, Tucson, , Arizona"... cracked me up.

I always find the scene very amusing in which he meets Magaret with some girls in the hallway: He asks for her name, and after she answered he goes on with wanting her for a play by asking her with her full name "Magaret Yang".

Don't remember it verbatim but something along the lines of:

(when talking about Dirk's sexy mother)

Max: Easy there, that's my best friend's mother you're talking about.
Guy: I thought the only reason you picked Dirk as your chapel partner was because of his mom.
Max: What are you a lawyer?

Letter from a very young Dirk to Max: "I knew for sure when they went skinny-dipping in Mr Blume's swimming pool giving each other hand jobs"...

"I beseech ye in the bowels of Christ, think that ye may be mistaken."

Max goes to Miss Cross' bed. Max lies down and stares at the ceiling.

Miss Cross goes into the bathroom. She puts on a white bathrobe and gets some cotton balls and hydrogen peroxide out of the medicine cabinet.

Max looks around the room.

MAX So, this is where it all happens?

MISS CROSS (from the bathroom) All what happens?

MAX I wouldn't know.

The kid talks in a strong irish accent and then, Max says:
