Misleading marketing - still ticks me off.

I saw this when it originally came out in the theaters. I remember my 6 year-old responding very strongly to the marketing for this film that was aimed point blank at him and other kids his age. When I took him to the theater, I didn't pay much attention to the PG-13 rating. Boy, I wish I would have. This was *not* a film for children. I wrote a letter to Dreamworks regarding the matter, I was so upset. It would have been fine if the marketing had been somewhere close to the truth, but they were pitching ice cream and wound up serving tequila shooters. To this day, I refuse to watch Joe Dante movies and I'm hard pressed to watch anything by Spielberg, who should have known better.

I hope Dreamworks burned your unopened letter.

Movie ratings exist solely for the reason you're complaining about. Would you take your 6 year old to see "Child's Play" and ignore the R rating just because it has a toy in it?

It is 100% your fault, 0% their fault.

And quit talking about Small Soldiers like it's The Exorcist lol jesus, was it really THAT bad?

reply

I took my son to see it when he was seven, and he demanded to see it again at the next possible opportunity.

So the OP saw trailers of toys walking around with weapons, attacking people, and performing acts of war and that that this PG-13 movie would be ok for kids but was upset when they thought it was not suitable for children?

Uhhh there is the trailer .... Filled with toys having violent war with humans.... HOW WAS THIS MOVIE MISLEADING? Which trailer did you watch??

reply

I was seven years old when this movie came out, I had no problem with it. I loved it.

Your 6 year old is what...24 now?

Did it scar him for life?

I saw this in theaters when I was 7...the only thing that scared me when I got home was the Gwendy doll scenes. Nothng about the film was too "adult" for me. Actually, seeing that they had this on Netflix, I decided to watch it again. I have no idea how this got a PG13 rating, it's a kids movie. Seriously, like this film is in the same vein as Scooby Doo and Stewart Little. The only thing you can make a case for is the fact that the bad guys use explosives, which is hardly something that any kid would get ideas from the he didn't already get from Toy Story.

I don't remember the marketing, but I have the feeling that people saw kids and toys in the previews and thought that meant it was a kids' movie. I was 13 when I saw it, the target audience I'd say, since it was a PG-13 movie. All I'm saying is no matter what kind of vibe the marketing gives you, pay attention to the rating. If anything, this was a soft PG-13, and probably no more offensive than anything else Spielberg and Dante have made.

I agree. I remember the reviews at the time complaining it was too violent for younger children but I don't think it is. Maybe a wee bit intense in some parts but nothing brutal or graphic. There's much more violent PG movies than this.

I saw this movie when I was 5 and loved it. The violence in this film was actually one of the things that made it unique, at least to me. This movie deals with war by toys in the first world and it goes gritty at times, with the main kid Alan getting shot, sliced, stabbed, and somewhat maimed throughout the movie. But it made the danger so much more serious and the idea of toys attacking humans more real and disturbing.

I will admit that the marketing for this movie was like something for Toy Story. My dad also hated the soundtrack with Bone Thugs and Henry Rollins talking about getting shot in the head. He would get mad when my brothers played it in our little van. But honestly, I didn't grow up to be a thug, a lunatic, or a bum because a movie that appeared to be family friendly turned out to be more dark and bloody. It's a matter of how you process the film, and some will react differently than others. I sort of appreciate the violence now because a movie like this would probably not get made while aimed at younger audiences. But I can see why you feel it was deceptive marketing. But don't ignore the rating.

I always wondered what kind of naive or sheltered person would get mad at this movie for being "Violent"
I thought the news were making a big deal out of nothing but I guess people like OP do exist...
I remember back then the news channels were complaining and making reports of how horribly violent and how terrible this movie was for kids. I remember them talking about how this could be too strong for kids...

meanwhile Movies like Jumanji and Jurassic park had more messed up scenes than this dumb movie...

Power rangers had more violence in it and it was rated PG and no one gave a crap about the violence...

I never understood how a movie as silly as this was supposed to scar any kids... I still dont see it. I think it was a bunch of over protecting parents overreacting.

kids all over the country were playing mortal kombat 2 and killer instinct in arcades or at home around this time.

even back in the late 80s toy companies were making toys for kids out of movies like aliens, robocop and predator..... they even made video games of those movies and there was a cartoon made of robocop for kids. you dont think kids were watching those?

i personally remember when In middle school how Terminator 2 was a movie that a lot of my friends liked.

I wonder the person who made this post, where were they when Power Rangers came out or when movies like Jumanji were playing in theaters... were they worried kids were going to be traumatized?

reply

If only there were some kind of system that could inform parents of the content of a movie before their children view, then tragedies like OPs story could be avoided!!!!!!

Take some responsibilities for your own oversight instead of blaming everyone else. The movie was rated pg 13 and you took your 6 year old, not Spielberg. I hope your child Wound up to be more willing to take responsibility than you.

reply

Content ratings aside, this one isn't as messed up as Toys, the old Robin Williams movie.
