In the first scene of the film, why did Sam hide his pistol behind the stack of boxes before entering the pub?


Was this ever explained? I mean - I know he mentions how he never goes into a place where there is no viable exit strategy, but I do not understand why hiding the gun outside was part of that. I mean, one would think that having their sidearm on them is a better idea than hiding outside, so yeah lol

I would imagine that if he is going to meet someone he does not know, they could frisk him. Or he could be held by that person at gunpoint, marched out of the place etc.

They would not know that he had a hidden gun, and if he could get to it then he could shoot them and escape.
