was trying hold my laughter in during first emperor scene

after he sends mace windu out the window. i held it in. i'm not usually even a laugher. when he names anakin lord vader and says gooood. i couldn't believe everyone in the packed theater was just silent during that scene.

i don't think it's a sign of the performance being bad because i always found some of his line delivery in rotj to be funny and imitable, like when he sais he's afraid the death star is fully operational.

That scene was freaky and terrible...Palpatine was in the dark force equivalent of an orgasm LOL !

Him laughing like crazy during the fight with Yoda was also freaky...dark force madness.

reply

lol it was like an orgasm

That's why I love Palpatine so very, very much! McDiarmud plays him right on the edge of Camp, but doesn't tip and fall in. The result is brilliant, scary, seductive, and funny and just delicious to watch, Palpatine is always the smartest guy in the room and is absolutely the best thing about the prequels!

IMHO the single most impressive thing about McDiarmud's wonderful performance in "AotC" and "RotS" is that it was undoubtedly done without any help from the director. Lucas ignores the acting part of filmmaking, and his actors either sink or swim. Portman and Christiansen sank, but the old pros swam like champions.

interesting point about the old pros vs the new ones.

Lucas has long been known as "The worst actor's director alive", in one of her memoirs Carrie Fisher said he basically gave her ONE piece of direction during the filming of "Star Wars", and she was 19 and it was only her second film! He didn't care if she used a British accent in some scenes and not in others, he was more interested in the special effects, and if the acting in "Star Wars" worked it was either brilliant casting that made it happen or a flat-out miracle, because George Lucas had nothing to do with it.

Unfortunately, since Lucas directed all three prequel films, his weakness as an actor's director became a big, BIG, problem. Well, at least there are some actors that don't need any help from the director.

The prequel trilogy works a lot better as comedies, go from like a 3 to a 5

watto and nute gunray make me laugh too

When Plinkett points out that they have been getting punked by Palpatine for three movies straights is the funniest shit.

reply

his whole having anakin and obi wan guard amidala in aotc is funny because she doesn't want distractions. she probably wouldn't have any if a jedi protector that she had no previous relations with was watching her, but the jedi go with palpatines idea of obi and ani anyways.

and mace is always questioning things but is too clueless to realize.
