How did this earn a better rating than 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame'?

Don't get me wrong, I love this movie sooo much! It's hilarious!! But...really. It's more of a silly, such-a-funny-movie type film. The Hunchback is so...I don't know..serious? And I'm not a stiff, either. I love comedy's. But The Hunchback is a classic!

I think this film different because it was one of the first without a load of songs thrown in to slow down the story. That makes it much more appealing to older viewers as well.

Well, it is not like "older viewers" are unable to like musicals. Do you think Broadway is just for little kids?

reply

I think it's because this movie was more focused on what it wanted to be. It's a funny comedy buddy movie through and through.

Hunchback is a movie pulled in different directions. It has serious parts, but also armpit farting animated gargoyles. The audience that appreciates one part may not necessarily appreciate the other. Plus there is the fact it is an adaptation of a pre-existing story, and not a terribly accurate one at that.

IMHO, ENG is a better movie.

I'd give The Emperor's New Groove about a 6.9. I'd give Hunchback a solid 7 though.
I kinda like Hunchback a bit more.

I don't think Groove's a better film either, but it's more consistent in tone. Singing Gargoyles, anyone?

reply

When it comes to the gargoyles, it is only fair that we remember that they have some basis in the novel.
It is mentioned at some point that Quasimodo talked to some statues because he was that lonely.
And thus, it is not as weird to see three singing gargoyles in a re-telling of the story as you might think.
And knowing that makes me appreciate them more than I would have done otherwise.

A lot of people were upset at the Disneyfication of the original story, with happy ending and everything.

What did they expect Disney to do though?
That story is so terribly bleak, that I don't get how anybody thought that it would work as a Disney movie.

And I'm glad that att least one version of this story lets Quasimodo survive and be happy.
(Even though he had to wait until the sequel to get a girlfriend.)

Why even compare this movie to Hunchback? They're so tonally and thematically different that it's far out of reach to even compare them at all. I'm not trying to sound opinionated, but still.

Groove is essentially more crowd-pleasing and easier in tone than Hunchback and is a movie that its aimed at a wide demographic. Hunchback is darker, dramatically uneven and more controversial as a whole, which is the reason why a wider demographic have been repulsed by it.
