Too thoughtful and sensitive for US audiences?

No offence to many intelligent Americans, but Hollywood doesn't have much faith in your education. They renamed The madness of (King) George (III) after all for this reason.

There are flashes of great action, acting and photography, but it's slower than Private Ryan although it has nice pastiches of the wife, which young scared lads would have thought of.

This is one of my most favorite films ever. The perspective of hearing the thoughts of these men at war touches me deeply every time I watch it. I find myself repeating lines from it all the time. Just yesterday I was on a hike with my boyfriend and we saw a baby owl that had fallen out of it’s nest and died, I said, ‘nature’s cruel Starros.’

The deep innermost words of these people at different levels of power and backgrounds is so human and beautiful.

The words from the dying Japanese soldier always affect me, “ Japanese Soldier: Are you righteous? Kind? Does your confidence lie in this? Are you loved by all? Know that I was, too. Do you imagine your suffering will be any less because you loved goodness and truth?“
