Seeing this in a theater must have been beautiful, magical

I wouldn't be able to get it out of my head for weeks if I saw it for the first time on a big screen!!!!!!!!!

I saw it on VHS about a year or so after it came out. But getting to follow the story, and see Middle-Earth in all it's beauty, with a good crowd would have been an all-time great moment in my life. If you had this moment, DON'T take it for granted! You were part of something special.

I needed an escape at the time. I live in NYC and 9/11 was still in our minds. This movie did that and I went back a number of times, especially going to morning matinee screenings with minimal audience. This movie helped me escape the grim realities for a couple of hours, I would love to see this in the theaters again, hopefully on the 20th anniversary they'll do a screening again.

Here we go again with that 9/11 nonsense. Why is it that you people always have to relate something with 9/11?? Can't you just leave politics and tragedies out of this movie and just watch it for what it is- a great fantasy epic? Jesus Christ, I am sick and tired of all this negativity!

Yeah it was great, I was 12-13 at the time and knew nothing of the stories from middle earth, it blew me away. Waiting a year for the next film wasn't easy. I remember being gutted when Gandalf fell and wanted to find out if he came back some how.

It was, I didn't know what to expect, but left the theatere in awe. Then I saw it another 4 times in the theatere.

I'm going to bump a few worthy threads. If for no other reason than to put them above the 'new board' advertisements and calls for petitions. These were our boards. We should have the 'last words' here. :-)

I'll never forget it and I still get chills thinking about it. One of the greatest of my life (for reference: I was a product manager for a startup that went IPO, have two beautiful kids, won state in H.S. in basketball).

It made me believe in magic and escapism.

I turned around and went right back in to watch it again.

That opening battle scene during the voiceover flashback just floored me. Especially where Sauron appeared and starts sweeping his giant mace back and forth into the Alliance army scattering them like bowling pins. I had never seen anything like that before. Amazing.

Yaa. It was epic AF... is makes you wonder if some alien species now occupies Jackson’s skin and made those junk hobbit films

The first film blew me away at the time. Like a window in another world.
