Needed my wisecracks for a will smith movie

He's good for jokes and this role was too dry.

And who cast his wife?!?

This is the only movie I can stand Will Smith in. I thought it was a good story, well acted, well directed.

I don't like that Will plays an idiot and the twist at the end is that he does something smart and saves the day.

I thought this was the first movie that portrayed the surveillance state in all its Orwellian terror - well before the actual arrival of said surveillance state, and it was a reasonably tight movie with a decent plot and script.

Enemy of the State and I Am Legend are my favorite Will Smith movies, so I guess I prefer the non-jokey Smith.

You didn't like Regina King as his wife? I thought she was awesome! She was also very good as Cuba Gooding Jr.'s wife in Jerry Maguire.

reply

It's just personal tastes. I don't like her big mouth.

I don't like "jokey" Will Smith. I think it's just cheap, and done-to-death. Movies like Bad Boys, with all the dumb wisecracks, feel like cheap, cookie-cutter, C- movies that serve up dumb gags for easy laughs. Will Smith is actually pretty tolerable when he plays it straight. Enemy of the State and I Am Legend are both pretty good. It would have ruined this movie (and made his character very annoying) if he was making bs wisecracks throughout.

The comic relief came at just the right times, sporadically, and mostly by that ragtag gang of special ops guys trying to chase him.
