Good but something felt reallllly off...

I get its a movie. I get there's a level of disbelief I should get accept because its fantasy. But it was like watching a bunch of aliens control a single good man. I'm supposed to accept that everyone, EVERYONE, could give a *beep* less that Truman is obviously being held against his will? Apparently the ENTIRE WORLD knows he's being deceived and NO ONE gives a *beep* enough to tell him? Not the kids in town? Not a single dissenter but his lover? Really? I mean...really? Billions of people turned in to watch this show and continued to do so? I just don't think people are that stupid or cruel in general.

They did show there were people (including some former "cast mates") that either broke into the set or broke character and attempted to tell Truman what was really going on ever since he was a toddler. And as the movie shows, there were others that were united with Truman's real love in trying to cancel the show. I assume hundreds (maybe thousands more) in the outside world also wanted to help but saw it as a waste attempting to break into Truman's secure world.

I get your point though. To see all those viewers cheering when Truman finally breaks out - and then they calmly proceed to watch something else - is pretty strange. While they might’ve been genuinely rooting for Truman to escape once the truth got out, you could argue that up until that time his life had been nothing but odd entertainment for them. Sure, for many it was escapism and being intrigued by the fact that this man was - unknowingly - given a perfect life to live. Nonetheless, something felt off about it. But this is all part of the philosophical themes the film explores.

Well, the girl who loved him tried to tell him when she was still a cast member of the show. Also, the viewers of the show didn't have much control over it. I believe that the whole reason they watched the show is because they loved Truman and were hoping that one day, he would find out the truth and leave. I think that's why they were so happy when Truman left. They didn't care that the show ended. The viewers were happy that Truman was finally free and not trapped inside a TV show

I remember them showing a montage of a few instances of people trying to tell Truman, but it didn’t quite work.

Also, you could make the argument that many people don’t really fully believe “reality TV” anyways and probably thought Truman was somewhat in on it, and it’s all for Tv/ entertainment.

First, it's a movie... But to answer your questions movie fully, consider that...

- Is Truman really being held against his will anymore than people who are born into different belief systems than we are, or in different political systems and such? This happenes around us all the time...

- People tried to warn him as other posters mentioned and the movie showed...

- People will watch a lot less interesting and far more cruel things, often without realising the cruelty involved or how debasing it is to the people on the show and to the viewers... Check out any of the thousands of reality TV shows as well as most social media channels (youtube, instagram, etc,,,) where people earn a living by maintaining some kind of following online that they get sponsors to pay for/advertise...

The scary thing is how our world today is far closer to a Truman Show reality than in 1998...

"..could give a *beep* less"

Could you please stop butchering the english language.

Is it not bad enough that 'couldn't care less' has mutated into 'couldn't give a shht', but now it's 'could give a shht'?

Think; which is correct? a) "Couldn't care less" or b) "Could care less"?

Replacing 'less' with another word just doesn't work, because this this particular phrase has a very specific meaning.

It means 'I care SO little, I could not care any less'. It means the caring is literally 'at the lowest pont it can be'.

If you go on changing not only the word 'less' to something else, but also changing the structure, you destroy all of the original meaning it was supposed to have. You might as well just say 'doesn't give a shht' - that would be less subtle, but at least it would make some kind of sense.

'Could care less' makes no sense, because it means you care SO MUCH that you could still lower your caring to be less. See how wrong it is?

'Could give a shht less' is like the mutations in 'The Fly' and 'The Fly II'; what the hell is that monstrosity?!

PLEASE don't write something like that again, I am more traumatized by your attempt to infuse two completely incompatible things while butchering BOTH than seeing any of the monsters in 'The Fly' and 'The Fly II' combined. I wonder when I can stop vomiting.
