Why are their guns so bad?

Watched Starship Troopers again last night. It's a good movie but I was wondering why their guns are so *beep* I mean they have massive space armadas with ships capable of warp speed yet their guns are *beep* toilet bowl. They're just basic machine guns. Takes about 6 soldiers firing constantly to take down one bug. You'd think they'd have some kind of plasma rifles or at least some sort of exploding bullets like the colonial marines in Aliens.

I know this is a dead horse, but the weapons used in the book were superior.

A few MI could wreck havoc in a short period of time. Tac nukes, homing weapons, flamers, and grenades made for a complete arsenal of destruction.

It was the MI that made the bugs pay in large numbers, but the bugs had the numbers and their own tech.

True, plus I doubt they would have ground forces go on foot to face these bugs toe to toe like that. They would do battle from afar or have some mechanized weapons like futuristic armor...tanks of the future. Just like today we wouldn't send a force of 500 foot soldiers with tank busting weapons onto a battlefield of 1,000s of tanks to just run up to tanks toe to toe on foot to start shooting at them.

The way the ground forces were deployed and the pathetic weapon they used against them was pretty silly.
I can't imagine any military using those tactics.

i think it's so, to make the action livelier.

aka the more bullets fired the more fireworks and entertaining it is
