Jeez, What happened?

Seriously, "two thumbs down?" "worst movie ever?" are we watching the same film?

My theories:
1. It was a total financial disaster ($62m in losses). Maybe the one of the biggest flops to date in 1997.
As always happens, people who don't really watch a lot of films but like to sound like they're in the know, conflated "[one of the] worst [financially perfoming] movies ever" with "worst movie ever." Just because no one watches something, doesn't make it bad.

2. Critics hated it because Dances with Wolves raised the bar for Kevin Costner so high, and Waterworld was an artistic and financial disappointment. Following up with another post apocalyptic movie, and one that had some minor flaws, wasn't enough to dig him out of his hole and they pounced. Nothing but another Dances with Wolves would have saved him at that point. Ironically, Postman was trashed alot more than waterworld, yet was a much better film.

3. Kevin Costner overstaying his welcome. Kevin Costner's movies (both starred in and directed) were a weird range of outstanding to pretty bad. So he was a mixed bag, who was still surrounded by a lot of residual glowing praise. That usually reads as hype. Critics were thrilled to deflate his mythos and "The Postman" was the unfortunate victim. As usual, the public bought the hype and stayed away in droves.

This movie was thoroughly enjoyable for me. I see it every few years when I get on a post-apoc trip and want to see if I'll "come to my senses" and suddenly hate it like everyone else seems to. Minor flaws aside (including the atrocious "everything is back to normal" costuming in the statue-dedication scene), it has aged well and is IMO stunningly underrated.

I agree with you. I also own it and watch it every couple of years. It isn't that bad. A little corny in places, but not terrible. The movie was made with some heart and sincerity. Unlike many of the zombie-apocalypse movies that are just an excuse for blood and gore.

I really liked the film, and saw it for the first time yesterday. Why don't folks like it? It has a lot of action in it and Kevin Costner (as well as the rest of the cast) was good as well.

reply

Agreed. I've always enjoyed movies about the reluctant or unexpected hero. This movie definitely has heart.

I really enjoyed it and found it to be a better film that Waterworld. I saw it at release. My girlfriend at the time absolutely couldn't stand it though.

Conquer your fear, and I promise you, you will conquer death.

As a fan of Waterworld I have to say that I liked this film even more. It's a long film, but it is very enjoyable, I don't really get all the hate. That's why I don't pay any attention to critics. I'd rather watch a film and come to my own conclusions.

All of the above plus I think the first portion of the movie is quite bad until the story gets going.

Oh come on guys let's get real here. The movie is WAY too long, filled with useless dialogues and uninteresting characters, the acting was totally awful, it had so many dumb elements (the girl wants Costner to make her pregnant because her husbard is infertile and then BOOM plot twist, she makes us learn that he was actually an abusive asshole after his death and she was actually attracted to this random guy she wanted to impregnate her and then starts the least subtle and the most uninteresting romance i've seen in a movie), the passing was boring, it was easy to miss the point because of how messed up everything looked and the directing seemed... Bored. It was basically the Coastner's alter ego of Dances with the Wolves without the subtility and the care of this one. With such a great premise he could have done a great flick, but it all came out as a rushed money grabber.

^This, plus, everyone hates the Post Office.

Hey, whatever happened to Kevin Lostit anyway?

reply

A lot of it was bigotry. Cute blondes aren't allowed to be acclaimed. Huge resentment followed the triumphs of ORDINARY PEOPLE and DANCES WITH WOLVES because they beat Scorsese movies.

reply

Right now, I'm SHOCKED at how prophetic it was.
