It was obvious that the character that Alicia Silverstone was portraying was closer to that than Barbara Gordon.
By the time Batman & Robin came around I doubt there was anyone still onboard who was that bothered about diving into Batman's lore!
By the way, there was a Scooby-Doo/Batman crossover episode that played with that, revealing that Daphne Blake (of the Scooby gang) is Alfred's niece.
