theoretically, if Casey had...

Okay, so something I just considered watching it. I don't mean this in a "blame the victim" way at all, because Casey couldn't have known that was coming at the point she still had the chance.

But say she had done what Sidney did during her first attack? Locked herself in her room? It was presumably upstairs, and we can see from the outside shots that her house lacks the sprawling, connected balconies that Sidney's house had, and therefore fewer ways in. When things started to get scary, but before she saw Steve and was therefore baited to stay down, she could've run upstairs and barricaded the door.

If she had done so, I wonder how things would've played out then. Ghostface may have tried to get in, but quite possibly wouldn't have had the time to do so, as they still needed to kill Steve, and her parents were coming. Maybe then try to kill the parents, but that might not necessarily have been doable. Maybe because of the element of surprise, maybe not because of numbers and the power of fighting for your child. Or maybe they would've just made do with killing Steve and leaving. They might've tried again the next night, but they'd then have their guard up, and Billy and Stu were on a schedule with their plan.

What's ironic is that right before Sidney's attack, she makes that comment about "running up the stairs when she should be going out the front door." Sidney ran up the stairs and survived. Casey went out the door and died, and if she'd gone upstairs, might have survived.

Thoughts?

I have lots of thoughts.

lots and LOTS of them.

However because the scene is so iconic, I have some troubles imagining it going down any other way.

That having been typed if Casey had have run upstairs she might still be alive.

If Billy/Stu/Ghostface ran out of time because of Caseys parents coming home then trying again the next night?

I don't think that would work.

Ghostface definitely would have tried to get in.

It also probably lacked Sidney's whacky closet door set-up, which is so uncommon in Cali that the filmmakers had to build it for the movie. Ghostface had no problem breaking through Sid's bedroom door - it was only the closet door up against it that stopped him. Killing Steve didn't take too long, neither did breaking through Casey's patio doors, so I think locking herself in her bedroom would have just killed her faster.

Lol, I'm from New South Wales, Australia and it seems that jackass/idiotic carpentry set ups have followed me in every place that I've lived (this stupid country). Having said that, it didn't strike me as wacky or odd when first watching Scream because I've been putting up with that kinda shit for 30 years haha.

Or how about just calling 911 when you said you were going too. Instead we get this exchange:

Casey: I am about 2 seconds away from calling the police.
Killer: They'll never make it time. We're out in the middle of nowhere.
Casey: Yeah I guess you're right. Why even bother.

Probably doesn't save Steve, might not even save her, although it does become possible for her to barricade herself in a room to buy time. And it does make it possible the police arrive and see the killers there, and possibly catch them.

It's easy to look back from the safety of my keyboard to say that I would have done some things differently. I probably would have been as terrified as Casey.

But it is ironic to see her playing with that butcher block of knives in the beginning of the scene before she realizes that she is in danger. Now I always think that she should have barricaded herself in a closet with those knives. Also she was making popcorn on the stove. Why not heat up a few pans of oil or water and take them with her to throw on her attacker?

Also, kitchens usually have bug spray, ammonia and other cleaners in the cupboards. It's one of the most dangerous rooms in the house! She had a lot of weapons at her disposal.

Of course her first move should have been to hang up and call 911 after the caller said that he wanted "to see what your insides look like". Then she could have hidden in a closet.

Also apparently the Mackenzies weren't that far away. There were other neighbors. Call one of them too!

But as I stated at first, who is that clearheaded when they are alone and threatened with a menacing stranger on the phone?
