Why was Bobby trying to help Stacy's mom find Stacy after killing her?

It was like he was trying to get close to Stacy's mom and wanted to take the place of the girl he abused and murdered.

If it was just to play with Stacy's mom's head, it was a sick thing to do.

He wanted to continue to have control. It’s fairly common for some killers to help in searching for the victim and get involved in the investigation

I agree, he wanted to prove that he's actually victim. Some killers are sometimes such a great maniuplators.
