Superior to it's sequel in every way

The sequel was trash, with Chinese pandering to squeeze a few more million out of the Chinese market.

This one is very rewatchable.

Their first mistake with the sequel was not getting the soundtrack right or bringing in the original conductor.

The second, was not having Constance Spano and Cpt Steven Hiller in it, and then not addressing Constance at all and outright killing Hiller, though rumor has it his "death" may have been a coverup for some reason yet revealed in the possibly never coming out third film.

The third, was turning the strong-minded President Whitmore into a mental case, come on.

The fourth, was having a magic school bus loaded with kids and a 90 year old survive the Alien Sector Queen's attacks.

The fifth, not utilizing the same or similar awesome sound effects the 1996 film had and replacing them with forgettable sound effects.

The sixth, comic relief a bit too overdone compared to the original film. A serious tone is required for believability.

The seventh, no City Destroyers. We loved those.

The eighth, Vivica A Fox (Jasmine) killed off on a whim in the opening attack? What?

In the end, a good popcorn film, at least until the popcorn runs out, but yeah, nothing compared to the original.

And the idea that we live in a futuristic, alien tech future. The first once grounded us in reality, thus making us experience the invasion from our point of view.

I like the idea of them using the alien tech to advance society. But the story was terrible.

Have to agree with you there. I loved this movie however I missed the sequel in theaters. Finally got a chance to see it on HBO. Really wished I hadn't.
