This and Pocahontas needed to be full on dark

I think if this and Pocahontas were fully dark films Disney wouldn't have made as much money but they would've made better films.

I don't see how HOND could have been any darker. I mean, isn't it already one of the darker movies in the Disney canon?

I think he means making it as dark as the original novel is. The novel is even darker than this movie.

I think the movie is darker than Pocahontas, I would prefer Pocahontas over The Hunchback of Notre Dame.

Some bits of humor could have done good, I mean, being humorless is not always good, and the humor in the movie wasn't bad humor, they just had to balance it better.

I think it was just misconceived to even think of Disney-fying Notre Dame de Paris. I recall thinking at the time, "What next? Mickey, Donald and Goofy as the Krazy Karamazov Brothers?" While there are some visually interesting bits of animation, the characters are distorted, the plot is messed up, the whole thing is spoiled: it's more like the 1939 film.

I'd love to see a decent adaptation; the 1956 film remains the best to date, and I like the ballet by Roland Petit.

What about Tarzan? If one Disney property is supossed to be dark, that's Tarzan.

It was too dark already, to be honest. What parent would make their child watch this?

reply

Yes, I believe that the people who want this movie to be darker don't get that it was primilarily made for kids.
I'm so glad too that at least one version of this story lets Quasimodo survive.
There are plenty of darker movies out there for the people, who like that kind of thing.
So I don't see why it's a problem that this one tackles some dark themes, but still can stay mostly family-friendly.
Really, it is incredible that they could adapt such a bleak novel into a partly light-hearted Disney movie anyway.

True, you can't expect Disney to be something they're not. Even if the movie will be better with dark tune, they have an audience who expecting to seen their familiar Disney product.

I do understand some of the criticism about the childish jokes. One of the parts that could have been improved in the film.

However, there are some exceptions, one is the movie Pinocchio (1940) that without doubt is very dark. Even here the original book is much darker.
