I've always thought that Gertrude murdered her. I can't remember in this movie specifically, but I'm going by the original text. Gertrude makes it sound like she saw the death, and doesn't specify whether others did.

shareWhoa, that's quite a leap. In the original text (as this movie uses), she's just describing her appearance and what she assumed likely happened. There's no reason why she'd want her dead ... she even mourns her death and says she hoped she'd marry Hamlet.

shareOkay, it's been a long time since I read it (but yes, I have, twice, and not Cliff's Notes). I admit I'm likely reading too much into it. But I guess it always felt that way to me because when Gertrude describes Ophelia's death, it sounds like she was an up close witness, which made it feel sinister.
