Was Verbal Kint being arrested a slip up on Soze's part or deliberate?

After watching this movie for the umpteenth time last night I got to pondering why Verbal was arrexted in the first place. Was it a deliberate thing on the part of Soze or was it an accident of timing? Did things move too quickly and the cops arrive to fast for Kint to high-tail it out of there?

reply

I'm pretty sure it was deliberate. He wanted to feed the police the dope deal gone wrong story so they would close the case and not investigate any further.

reply

Agree 100%. He wanted to be arrested at the pier so he could tell them that it was a dope deal. The slip up was one of the Hungarians making it off the boat alive.

reply

Which arrest?

reply

The one at the pier.

reply

I think he did not actually intend to be arrested that time, though it was not a mistake, just a hazard of the job he had to do.

reply

Why would he deliberately get arrested? He ended up worse off after being arrested and showing his face in front of 50 cops and security cameras.
The point, however, is that he got away, much in the same way that he was able to con the crew of 5 into the suicide mission to take out his rivals + Arturro Marquez

I'm in the deliberate arrest camp

He wanted to feed the cops the drug-deal-gone-wrong story, AND he wanted to plant the idea that Keaton was the mastermind.

He just didn't count on the surviving Hungarian being able to identify him.

reply

He doesn't put the blame on Keaton until Kujan shows up, though, so I don't think that was originally part of his plan.

reply

Good point - there's something about the Keaton-is-Söze narrative that reeks of improvisation.

And you're also right that it was Kujan who floated the notion that Keaton was behind "that circus at the harbor," and had faked his death, again.

As he's saying this off-camera, we're given a close-up of Verbal hiding a smirk (because he knows Keaton's dead, because he killed Keaton himself).

reply

Oh yeah, absolutely. And Söze's name was never even supposed to pop up. It's only because of the Hungarian who survived.

Verbal hoped to pass it off as a drug-deal-gone-wrong, but after meeting Kujan he decided to play along and he thoroughly enjoyed it.

reply

You are aware that Verbal is Soze, right?

reply

It was deliberate, he wanted the police to think that Keaton was Keyzer Soze. And it worked until the very end.
