most RETARDED character in movie history

Forest W!

'Something bad happened here' no *beep* sherlock

they find Sil's car in the middle of the road without gas: 'She walked... She walked' ooooooooh really?

'She didn't like it when you locked her up' damn Forest, your psychic powers amaze me

'Laura and Press, they like each other'- Did NOT see that one coming y'all!

and the list goes on and on

I still think his name should have been Dan Obvious. So then everytime he gave us one of his little psychic gems, Michael Madsen could have looked right at him and said "Thank you, Mr. Obvious".

What if he was in the military and promoted to Captain?

It was certainly obvious that Xavier Fitch felt bad after trying to kill Sil, because he shed a tear. He told Dan Smithson he didn’t know if he felt bad, but Dan guessed that and he knew.

Around the beginning while he was at that psychiatrist‘s office, Dan knew that someone was at the door before they knocked and that it was for him.

Dan knew Sil was frightened when she murdered that train conductor. He knew that Sil killed whenever she felt threatened and knew that she had no remorse about it whatsoever. People like Dan, psychics, empaths or whatever you want to call them, can sense other people’s emotions, something us normal people who don’t have psychic powers can’t do, and when I say normal, I do not mean that in an offensive way at all.

When Laura Baker’s camera went out and she and Preston Lennox went to replace it, Dan definitely felt that something was wrong, and his fear was definitely confirmed when he saw that the creature they were experimenting with was growing rapidly.

Dan instantly knew right then that it was that guy Robbie who left with Sil when the clubber told him so, and he turned out to be completely right. Would anybody else be able to guess that?

Dan knew that Robbie might have upset Sil; Robbie was totally insistent that she not go anywhere and stay with him. As I've said earlier, a psychic person like Dan could sense emotions.

Yes, Dan knew that Sil walked, which I’m sure any person would probably be able to guess, but he knew which direction she walked. Dan also completely sensed something while he was at the club and then went outside, and that’s when he ran into Sil who then faked her own death. And Dan knew something wasn’t right after Sil faked her death, but then, even Press had a feeling, so I guess that’s reasonable. People do get those gut feelings.

Dan knew Laura and Press liked each other, and yes, anyone would guess that. And he knew that Laura wanted Press to follow her back into her room, but I guess that one was a no-brainer, too.

Dan also knew that it was Sil having sex with Stephen Arden, without ever actually having seen her after she supposedly died.

What I want to know is why Dan lost his psychic powers once the team got into the sewer. It was an extremely serious situation. Dan couldn’t have been confused and sensed more than one presence, because Sil hadn’t yet gave birth.

Also, how could Dan not have known that little baby boy was Sil’s offspring? Rather than try to sweet-talk the boy, Dan could have torched him right there. He also could have helped Laura when she got stuck near that oil that was then flaming when the fire struck it. And I could have sworn I thought I saw two aliens before Sil got torched. I wonder which one of them was the real Sil and which one was her offspring. And Dan also definitely seems to have visions just like Sil.

If anybody's "retarded", I think it would be that science team. Sil seemed to always be way ahead of the team while they hung around the same places. At times, it seemed like they were totally slow when Sil was right there in front of them, and I’m referring to when the crew went to the scene of the accident, and Sil wasn‘t that far away from them when she was at that hospital. And she was also right in front of them when she hid behind that wooden fence after murdering that guy who checked her into the hospital (his name was John Carey, I believe). And Dan and Press couldn’t even see her? They couldn’t at least see her eye through that small hole?

The team also thought Sil might have went back to the club, when she wouldn't be that dumb. And after the accident where Sil got that poor woman killed, the cars sped right past her and did not notice her. And I know that woman’s body might have been burned and completely charred, but I’m sure the team could have still been able to make out the body in the passenger seat and how it was tied up. If the crew thought that woman really was Sil, then how could Sil try to escape and tear her finger off in the doorway if she was supposedly tied up in the passenger seat?

And I wonder how that crew could try and capture Sil after drinking all that Long Island Iced Tea.

Around the beginning of the movie when Sil escaped, it might have been a very good idea for Fitch and his people to stop the trains and to just say that Sil was some kind of fugitive trying to escape. Press and Laura could have said the same thing when they got to the answering machine of that John Carey fellow. And speaking of which, why was it night time when they finally got all of John Carey's information from his credit card? Did it really take them that long? That science team seemed to be goofing around. They were dealing with a creature who might destroy the entire human race for goodness sake.

That science team could have been more careful with that experiment. Sil grew and developed waaay too fast. And those guards chasing her towards the beginning of the movie were being very dumb as well, the guys wearing those dark military-looking outfits and the cadaver dogs. They were chasing her at first and were later seen walking in another shot. Did they really think that the helicopters and flames they shot were going to do the job and catch up to Sil?

I thought Sil was pretty dumb, too. She didn’t have to follow the science team back to the hotel room, but I knew she was after Press. And after she faked her own death, she could have been long gone as someone on these message boards had pointed out. She kept following the crew and hanging around them.

I thought Laura Baker was pretty dumb when she said that the team ought to make that creature with just its own DNA. Um, hello? They'd deal with the same problem again just as they did with Sil.

Forest Whitaker is not a dumb guy, it’s his character Dan Smithson whom you think is dumb.

Why the fruck you think he didn't know that the baby was Sil's ? he knew. Few times before in the movie he mentioned that the creature attacks when he scared or feel threatened, so he simply tried to calm the creature. "Come here, i won't hurt you".

And after the accident where Sil got that poor woman killed, the cars sped right past her and did not notice her

The firemens? they probably had any idea for the fire cause. I Mean, they knew it was a car crash for sure, but they had no idea it was cause of some kind of chase.

but I’m sure the team could have still been able to make out the freaking body in the passenger seat and how it was tied up.

They couldn't recognize the girl, they choose on purpose an actress who basically looks like Sil - a blonde white women, with bright eyes, similer height etc.
Her face would be complitely corrupt, she had ducktape on her mouth and it's flammable.
The ropes or ducktapes that tied her would be burned immediately and she defintely changed position and location, i won't be surprised if they found her outside of the car, she couldv'e flew out of the window or something.

Kelly, thanks for posting detailed info from the movie itself to back-up the fact that not everything Dan said was "obvious," like all these whiners claim. I thought he was a great character and enhanced the movie. Besides, as you point out, the script needed his character so that the team chasing Sil would know the general direction Sil took, over and over again. Otherwise, they'd just be guessing and following a bunch of dead ends, not to mention boring the viewer.

What I want to know is why Dan lost his psychic powers once the team got into the sewer. It was an extremely serious situation. Dan couldn’t have been confused and sensed more than one presence, because Sil hadn’t yet gave birth.

When they first get into the sewers Xavier is shown giving Dan a hard time, rolling his eyes at his psychic 'powers,' etc. Actions like this hurt hyper-sensitive people, like empaths, because they feed on the positive energy of others; negative, hostile vibes repel them. This, plus the dire life-threatening situation was stressful to Dan and so he was having a hard time picking things up in the sewers.

Ha! Totally agree with the OP. I just watched this movie last night for the first time since seeing it when it opened, and I sat there thinking what the eff is this useless lump Dan Obvious character doing telling us sh!t we can all see? And the most stupid thing was that he knew Sil was in the English guy's hotel room from two rooms away but he couldn't tell she was directly above his head in the sewer pipes!?!. Asinine. I've decided this is a stupid, corny movie and I hate it. Except for Natasha Henstridge's breasts and seeing her in that cute lingerie, and the presence of the perennially gorgeous Marg Helgenberger, who adds beauty and class to anything she's in, this movie is a worthless pile of crap. The Dan Obvious character was obviously this Alien rip off's version of the hand held detectors from Alien. He was just an obnoxious, dopey talking version.

It's always the problem with "empaths" in movies - like Deanna Troi in the new-gen Star Trek - they always end up saying obvious and pointless things.

"I sense that you're upset." Hah!!

You might very well think that. I couldn't possibly comment.

reply

The early Troi was bloody annoying with the "Captain, I've never sensed anything like this before". That got so boring and long winded, but fortunately the character became a little more multifaceted towards the later seasons.

reply

His characther was kind of odd. I dont think he shouldve been in the film, his role was not really neeeded.

I know this thread is 4 years old, but I just had to add that I completely agree with the original poster. Forrest Whitaker's "Empath" character was literally the stupidest character I've ever seen in a movie, and every single thing he said was just nothing but Captain Obvious. "Something bad happened here!" Seriously?!? What gave it away?!?! The giant hatched chrysalis still attached to the wall and the dead train employee on the floor beneath it with flies buzzing around and a bad stench in the air causing people to cover their mouths/noses??? Thank you, Captain Obvious! You really earned that paycheck the government is paying you for tagging along on this top secret mission! "She didn't like being locked up." Really?? I wonder how he knew!

The character was *the* reason I couldn't even keep watching the movie. I got about 15 minutes in, and I just couldn't do it anymore and shut the movie off. I wasn't expecting a top notch A-level movie, I knew it was a B movie, and to just roll with it and have fun with it, but seriously, that character was just so dumb I couldn't even pretend to dumb myself down to that level just to tolerate it. So so so so dumb. If they'd scrapped that character completely, or at least, changed him to be telepathic so that he could produce insights that nobody else could possibly know, THEN maybe the movie could have been better.

reply

lol- the "she doesn't like being locked up" comment was so stupid! Who does like being locked up?

It figures the government would hire some useless idiot like this. We've already wasted a few billion dollars, what's a few billion more on a guy who tells us the obvious!

I suggest using him for Hotels.com "Captain Obvious" commercial...

I think there was even one point in the movie where he said something stupidly obvious and the look on Ben Kingsley's face was like, "Oh really! That's amazing Dan! I'm glad I don't need to rely on my own common sense and logic when I got you here to say it!"

I was cringing every time Dan spoke. His character really made it B-movie-esque.
