Feels very dated

Couldn't help but feel that apart from the computer stuff this could have been an 80s movie. The clothes, characters, locations all felt very dated. Hard to believe this came out the same year as Se7en!

Just watched this movie today, and I very much agree, it does seem like it was made longer ago than mid 90's.

Well 1994/5 (when the film was produced) is closer to the 1980s than we currently are in 2015. It's like criticising the first Dirty Harry for feeling a bit 1960-ish when it was made in the first half of the 1970s. Ghostbusters feels a bit 1970-ish now, despite the aggressively 1980s Ray Parker soundtrack. Decades overlap heavily and slowly evolve.

Yes, like the early to mid 60s were still very 50s-ish still until 1967, the summer of love etc. made it an entirely different era.

Y'know, I could eat a peach for hours

Thank you. Look at how much we grow technologically just year to year. That was a reflection of what was happening then. Today we even laugh about pictures of flip cell phones we see from as recent as 2006,2008. Forget about I phones. It's the reality and there for a purpose to remind us of this fact, whether we're growing too fast for good or bad.

Yes, the clam shell and "classic" Nokia phones universally used all through the 2000s (and still a fairly common site until as late as the very early 2010s) now already looks naff. Also floppy discs, Polaroid cameras, cassette tapes, and tape camcorders had staying power through the 1990s and in the first half of the 2000s but now is dinosaur gear when digital gear serving similar functions (like USBs and smartphones) matured since 2006-ish. The DVD, the iPod and it's ilk are becoming early to mid 2000s relics.

By 1967, the futuristic neon gogo boots mini skirt fashion was turning hippie. Early to mid 60s was fast from the loose baggy pants for the guys in the 50s and the big hooped skirts and short curly haired women of the 50s.

The characters and their wardrobes aside, I thought it was also dated for being somewhat unoriginal. Of course, after thinking of some of the "copycat" movies that were released after this one, I ended up appreciating this movie a lot more. That said, the look and feel of "Copycat" doesn't hold up at all (it's certainly no Se7en).

Hey there, Johnny Boy, I hope you fry!

reply

I disagree. It seems fine to me. Not really that dated.

reply

It doesn't seem too '80s to me.

reply

Of course it can feel dated in comparison to today but it's the exact same movie today as it was when it came out. The whole first half of the 90s still felt like the 80s anyway. Regardless since film doesn't age it's still the same great movie it was then now.

reply

You may want to avoid movies more than two or three years old.

reply

Se7en was way ahead of it's time but Copycat was exactly of it's time..... it wasn't perceived as "an 80's movie" in 1995. I get a feeling you weren't even alive when this movie came out.
