Great but shouldn't be number 1

It's a great film like many others. People watch it and likes it. Then rate it 10. that's how most people vote it. That's how it is on number 1 now. I can see many great films out of 30. A simple question, TSR has the highest vote, why? Any movie that is rated number one could be watched by all. My suggestions do not consider imdb rating seriously.

It's not that complicated to understand how it ended up on nr. 1

Lots of other movies in the top 50 are more 'love it or hate it'. The Shawshank redemption has a large fan base and not many people who genuinely dislike it. So it doesn't get a lot of low scores and a whole lot of 8's, 9's and 10's. Boom: highest average score.

the reason it's number one is because there's no "confusing" or "controversial" plot points or themes that some people can't grasp, like in Taxi Driver, Clockwork Orange, Pulp Fiction, etc. it's an easy message to grasp and almost no one hates it, so there's not as many 1s or 2s to drag the rating down. It's not even close to being the actual best movie ever, it wasn't even the best movie of 1994, it's just the least hated movie.

I like it a lot, but yeah it probably shouldn't be. An awful lot happened in 'Shawshank' that feels convenient or lucky.

- Nobody checking behind Andy's giant posters in almost 19 years obviously.

- Nobody checking on Red's mail after Andy's escape knowing what great friends they were and knowing he'd very possibly try and contact Red (the blank postcard would've definitely raised questions).

- Red at the end only acting on the hope that nobody would care he broke parole. Never mind the fact that again they knew he and Andy were great friends so if someone put 2 and 2 together they'd probably realize at least what was happening was a strong possibility and indeed be after Red.

- Possibility of pipe Andy crawled through having deadly gases. Not sure about that one, but given everything else, it wouldn't surprise me.

It's like 95% great but yeah, some of it relies a bit TOO much on 'movie magic'.

I would not put it at #1 myself but I can certainly appreciate why it is at that position. It's a wonderful film, beautifully directed and acted, with about as satisfying a final act as I could have hoped. There are certain films I would call 'perfect'. This is one of them. I wouldn't change a thing.
