one thing you can't argue works well in this film
the fact that no character is ever given a backstory!
the gold watch had a reason to be in the plot.
take notes, contemporary cinema.
Why do you feel the characters needed backstories? The film works perfectly without it. Or are you trying to say that it does work well? The wording of your post's title is a bit vague.
Personally I think it's great that we immediately know everything we need to know without any unneeded exposition.
I believe he’s commending the film not being critical of it.
