'Treat her like she's your sister.'

That is NOT how you treat your sister. I'm pretty sure it would have been illegal to treat your sister like that, even back then...

There was no relation between them at all, by blood, marriage, or even documentation. She was just staying with them as a foster child. It was perfectly legal.

I had missed the beginning of the movie when I first saw it and hadn't read the book yet. Thought they actually were siblings.

Win the originally published version of the book, Victor and Elizabeth are blood cousins. In the rewritten 1831 version, Elizabeth is an adopted Italian orphan Victor gives the honorific of cousin to.

Requiescat in pace, Krystle Papile. I'll always miss you.

Every version of the book I read says she is adopted by his parents and isn't related by blood.

Plus, there's a clear parallel between the forbidden knowledge Frankenstein acquires in the scientific and medical fields and his "forbidden" relationship with his "sister" Elizabeth. The film (and book) make sure that the relationship is *technically* okay, but I think it's meant to evoke a theme that Victor is somebody who ignores, or revels in breaking, taboos. None of his obsessions are 100% healthy.
