Actually MANY people know that - They just don't care.
Technically it's true, but the name Frankenstein is now heavily tied to the monster itself as well as the creator.
In a way, though, it does fit.
Victor Frankenstein is the "father" of the monster.
There fore it could be assumed that the "child" may take the name.
(children taking the surname of their fathers is traditional in most cultures)
Remember, the monster has huge daddy-issues lol
The fact that Victor refused to give him a name was one of the greatest insults that drove the monster to the edge. Without a real name, the monster WAS just a monster. He wanted to be a real person very badly.
Think of him as Mr Frankenstein Jr. I'm sure that's what he'd prefer.
The monster didn't see himself as a monster - he was just yet another son abandoned by his father.
