Roger's Rant In TOW Boobies

In the episode Roger goes on a rant and starts mocking all the friends saying 'Define me' and 'I need love'. Not sure what the 'define me' part means... perhaps it's a need for validation? But it sounds like basic human needs to me. Why does he have a problem with this, being a shrink and all?

reply

Whose Roger?

reply

He was a character played by Fisher Stevens in an episode in season 1. The one with the Boobies... he dated Phoebe.

reply

Completely forgot that was Fisher Stevens.

reply

Right, and everybody liked him at first, because he was witty, but then he turned his wit on them, claiming that the big coffee cups at Central Perk "might as well have nipples on them."

reply

Now that you both mention it, I can absolutely hear him. It's been years since I watched the show.

reply

He's probably complaining that they're overly needy and haven't done any introspection. "Know thyself," Socrates said.

I've often wondered if the Roger storyline wasn't a reaction to a negative review of the show because there were some reviewers who questioned why these yuppy types were worthy of a show. When someone has complaints like that, one way to preempt them is to get there first yourself.

reply

Thank you, makes sense.
