That scene between Hopper and Walken...

Watched this for the first time recently and I'd have to say that whole Sicilian/Negro scene is just brilliant. Absolutely hilarious. Probably in my top 5 scenes of all time. Laughing about it right now. Anyone else absolutely love this scene? Also I'm going to watch the Tarantino cut very soon, how does it compare to the normal version?

Thanks.

I'm not a huge Tarantino fan, but from my knowledge of his films, he does seem obsessed with the N word. I frankly hate hearing it from blacks but especially whites as it always has that racist connotation.

Using the word gives authenticity to the scene. Whatever tender sensibilities you have films need to be realistic and in the real world people (and especially such people as are portrayed in the movie) use this word frequently. Ruthless murder is far more offensive than saying a word yet you don't seem to object to that. It's an odd perspective albeit a common one.

reply

That's all well and good, but I don't have to be ok with it and still think he is obsessed wit the word.

Now, as far as not objecting to ruthless murder? Hmm, I wasn't talking about that, but to be clear, no, I don't like the glorification of violence.

reply

If you don't like the glorification of violence, then why the hell are you watching a Tarantino movie?

And if you don't like the "n-word", then why the hell are you watching a Tarantino movie?

Well, there is a difference, especially with the intent behind the word.

Or do whites just use it to be like black people?

If anything in cinema history touches perfection, this is the scene. My favourite of all. The writing, the acting... it all comes together.

I fell in love with Walken delivery of the line:

"I havenĀ“t killed anybody .. BANG! .. since 1984, .."

Brilliant, absolutely. But hilarious?

I loved it. It's one of those jaw droppingly offensive moments in film that I couldn't help but laugh at, but there was defintely an underlying point to this scene as opposed to other QT movies where he just sprouts "nigger" out left, right and centre just because he can. Obviously Hopper is trying to coerce Walken into killing him so he doesn't have to give up his flesh and blood to a bunch of gangsters, but simultaneously insulting them and making them look the fool was oddly humorous to me too.

I love how Walken washes his face and gives the line about "wiping this egg off my face". At least he can acknowledge that he'd been roasted even in the depths of seriousness which just further adds to the humour in the film, lol.

I like that scene but I was disappointed that Walken didn't show up later in the film.
