Yes, that's what he *should* have done. But Daniel was a man/boy with no impulse control and, generally speaking, was more of a buddy and less of a father figure to his kids.

That's why Miranda divorced him. Too bad he to lose her before he finally figured it all out.

The main thing he should have done about birthday plans was to *talk* to Miranda and agree on plans, but I suspect they didn't spend a lot of time talking agreeably at that point. IMHO their relationship had become a sort of Peter-Pan-and-Wendy relationship from hell by then, and every time she tried to talk sense he reacted like she was controlling and a party pooper. That's how any relationship with a Peter Pan goes, unless you're willing to be just as irresponsible as they are, you become the adult, responsible, controlling, party pooper. And when you do, they ramp up the immaturity.

That's one if the more grownup things about this movie, showing how two nice, good-natured, loving people could bring out the worst in each other.

She was a controlling party popper.

That's the thing about having a Peter Pan in your life. If you're not another Peter Pan yourself, if you have any common sense or the ability to foresee the consequences of actions... you will become a controlling party pooper. They'll turn you into one!

That's the thing, this is a movie about two nice people who brought out the worse in each other.

It's not a party unless the petting zoo is in your house.
