I just realized them releasing this in July of 1993 was stupid...

I mean releasing this type of movie in the summer?? what were they thinking back then lol..i can see why it bombed though but at least had a huge cult following despite getting trashed by critics.

sure some events don't make sense but it's one of the rarest halloween movies that's non-horror to enjoy šŸ¼

Doesn't make a lot of sense to release a Halloween-themed movie in July. I think it gathered a huge following as a result of it being shown around Halloween. Disney Channel aired it for quite a few years (maybe they still do?).

I was just wondering the same thing. How do you market a Halloween movie for the summer?!?!

reply

probably released earlier to capitalize off the vhs sales when the film would have been released in September/october

reply

Batman Returns takes place during the Christmas, and that was released in July 1992 and still was a hit.

.

reply

Because Batman Returns is a Batman movie first and the fact it's set in Christmas is secondary. Hocus Pocus without Halloween is like.....well it's like something.

reply

Gremlins takes place over Xmas and was released in June.

Again, Gremlins is a movie about horrific little creatures first and taking place during Christmas has little bearing on the plot. Hocus Pocus is made clear that this is a Halloween movie.

reply

Yeah but batman returns wasnt ABOUT christmas, whereas this movie was ABOUT halloween.

They released Halloween H20 and Halloween:Resurrection in the summer time. Maybe they thought it would make more money in the summer. I don't know.

reply

I think both of those movies were released towards the end of August. The thought might have been they would have still been playing in theaters going into the fall.

reply

Yes, very stupid. Would likely have made much more money if it had been released in October. *beep* *beep*

reply

No more stupid than releasing horror movies around and on Christmas.. many movies have done that.

But look at it this way, 'Miracle on 34th Street' (1947) was released May 2nd!

reply

I think it's dumber to release a Halloween movie in July. The entire movie takes place on Halloween. It would be like releasing A Christmas Story on Labor Day weekend.

reply

Yeah it definitely should have been released closer to Halloween.

reply

Miracle on 34th Street was released in summer of 1947 because that is when people went to the movies. The advertisers went out of their way not to indicate that it was a Christmas movie.

reply

And stayed in theaters until Christmas making tons of money. Summer is the movie going time of the year.

reply

That doesn't make much sense at all but at least the home video was likely released around October, which was three months later.

It does makes sense these days to release Horror movies in July because they usually come out 10-14 weeks later on video but this movie came out on VHS 14 months later in September of 94.

reply

Oh wow, I had completely forgotten about that! I don't even think a rental was available for that long. It just seemed like Disney did not care about this movie at the time since it bombed in theaters.

I'm glad it garnered a cult following over the years. It's such a sweet and simple Halloween flick that hasn't aged at all. It's still watchable, even to this day.

I'm sure if there were ever a sequel, then it would be a guaranteed hit. Disney is stupid for not even considering it.

"but this movie came out on VHS 14 months later in September of 94."

Thank you. I was just about to say back in the day they took FOREVER to come out on VHS.

In the U.S./Canada, HOCUS POCUS was released on home video in January 1994.

I just now realized that myself. Yeah, if you are going to do a holiday-themed movie then release it when the season is right. It's definitely a cult film regardless so it definitely didn't really set it back in the long run. Though it probably would've helped it be a major hit if they released it around Halloween.
