The real Punxsutawney...

...is nothing like how they show it in the movie.

We live about two hours away, and took a ride up there for the first time last fall. Nice place, but it's not how you'd picture it if you base it on just the movie.

The place where they do the Groundhog Day ceremony isn't in a square in the middle of town, but instead in a park about a mile and a half driving distance from the center of town. People walk there from town, but it's not the short stroll they show in the movie.

And if you look at youtube videos of the event, you'll see that the place is PACKED with people that morning, not the sparse crowd depicted in the movie. And as another nitpick, it's still dark out when they have the ceremony (they had fireworks this year).

But like I said, the town is nice anyway, and there's a great place to eat called Punxy Phil's Family Restaurant. But the best part is you can visit Phil the Groundhog at the public library.
