Can anyone tell me which cut I have?

It's a R2 DVD (I'm in the UK), released through Optimum Home Entertainment in 2008. The title is shown as Bruce Campbell vs Army of Darkness. The running time is stated as 92 minutes. It has Ash singing 'London Bridge is Falling Down' as he stomps the little Ash's in the windmill, the brief love-on-the-rug scene, as well as the 'Give me some sugar' kiss soon afterwards (I don't think every version has these). The ending attached to the film is the oversleeps/post-apocalyptic one (the S-Mart ending is included on the DVD as an extra). And the film contains the line 'I ain't that good', rather than 'Good...bad...I'm the guy with the gun' when Ash despatches 'Evil Ash' (for the first time).

Any ED buff know which of the four (I believe) cuts this is?

Sounds like the director's cut, which runs at 96 minutes – or 92 minutes because of the 4% PAL speedup.

Thank you! Weird that it doesn't say director's cut on the packaging.

It's one of the few surprises of this movie. On Sci Fi, there was a version with an extended scene that kind of explained why he ran into the mirror at the windmill. He saw a figure and rant to attack breaking it and causing the little ashes.

It also included the line "a man's body is his own private property.... that'll show ya." While digging the hole to throw Evil Ash's body parts in. I'm always annoyed that that line gets cut put.

It was hosted by the Undertaker in his Theater of Doom.

That's in my version, too. One of the reasons I wasn't sure which version I had was that looking online it seemed to contain elements of different cuts. I guess that's down to poor or confused descriptions by some people.

There was a bit by red letter media on youtube in which the pointed out the many DVD versions put out. It's pretty fun considering how this movie gets a new release so often.

It does seem to get a lot of releases. Although someone was saying on here the other day that they owned The Evil Dead Groovy Collection and AOD wasn't included (it had The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2, and the Ash vs Evil Dead TV show). Rights issues again, apparently.

Directors cut.

Easiest way to remember is that the directors cut is the only one with the downbeat ending. All other three use the S-Mart ending.

Of the other three, only the 'Theatrical Cut' is in common circulation these days, as far as I'm aware. The 'TV Cut' is exactly that, a neutered theatrical cut for TV. It's not something anyone cares for really. The 'International Cut' is basically an intermediate between the theatrical and directors. It's basically a slightly trimmed directors cut with the theatrical ending.

Nowadays on home media it's the theatrical and directors cut that exist. I'd consider these the two primary cuts. You either take the theatrical or you jump to the directors, the international is just sitting in the middle of no mans land. The international has been ousted on home media releases in it's original territories in favor of the directors cut. Though some non-Americans will still have this on their old DVDs and may well like it.

Thanks 👍

Well hot damn. I've only ever seen the S-Mart ending. I had no idea there were different cuts.

If it has these two scenes; after Ash kisses Shiela she ends up on top of him making love and he wakes up in a post nuclear scenery, then that's the director's cut.

reply

It's definitely got both of those.

I think they once called the director's cut the boomstick edition
