Why do some people keep comparing The Penguin to Trump?

Have they watched the film properly? Don't they realise that The Penguin is a tragic character, and that Burton, the film's director, instinctively empathises with outcasts and freaks? Anyone comparing the two is basically saying that this film empathises and feels sorry for Trump. Pretty idiotic IMHO.

Weird...

I thought that Shrek is more like Trump--he has his son who is equally as vile.

reply

Agreed. I've always thought Shreck was based on Trump, way before he was the GOP nominee.

And Chip does remind me of Eric and Donald Jr. But out of interest, and I'm not disagreeing with you whatsoever, but simply want to know your thoughts, why do you think Chip is 'vile'?

reply

The way he says bring joy to the masses---he is obviously looking down at the citizens of Gotham in a patronizing manner

He does not consider himself one of the people.

reply

Who were the masses in this film?

Not the people on the stage, right?

reply

The population.

RIP Gene Wilder. RIP Robert Vaughn. RIP Carrie Fisher. 2016 is the worst!

reply

I think the comparisons are as much to the Penguin from the '60s television series as to the film character.

Plus what they're really emphasizing is that the Penguin (from both versions) and Trump are pretty openly shameless.

reply

Maybe the Penguin is more like Hilary.

Penguin is Sanders

Eccentric horny independent who draws young people to his campaign. Pretends to be outsider but actually has considerable wealth and privilege. Refers to catwoman in derogratory sexist terms because she won't do what he wants when he wants.

reply

Because they're both fat annoying disgusting idiots who are painful to watch and listen to.

reply

You're an annoying idiot whose comments are painful to read. I'm guessing you're fat and disgusting too.

Evil business mogul Max Shrek is the GOP and Donald Trump is the Penguin. Initially, Penguin blackmails Shrek into helping him. Shrek is resentful at first, but complies. Shrek soon gets an idea that he can use the Penguin to his advantage. Penguin is a mentally unstable criminal, but he captures the intrigue of Gotham's citizens. Since Penguin can be easily manipulated with no more effort than a simple stroking of his ego, Shrek seeks to position the Penguin into the Office of the Mayor. With Penguin in power, Shrek can essentially get whatever agenda he wants accomplished, no matter how nefarious or corrupt, while keeping his own hands clean. Penguin would never last as the mayor. His mental illness and impulsiveness combined with the kinds of things Shrek would manipulate him into doing would all but doom his political career, if not land him in prison. But before that would happen, Shrek would get whatever he wanted without having to face any of the repercussions of Penguin's inevitable fall.

That's more like Obama, as the house negro for the establishment left. He bailed out the banks and invaded more countries than Bush.

The GOP did everything they could to stop Trump, and even now, they obstruct him more than the Democrats. Trump is resisting their agenda. The only time the media praised him is when he bombed Syria. He has cut CIA funding for that war. He has pulled troops away from defending South Korea. These things weren't supposed to happen.
