Do men who hit women watch this and cringe?

After seeing how horrible they can really be?

"Duh. You're the idiot. Not me."

reply

I doubt the type of men that hit women would actually watch this movie. If they did, they'd probably conclude that their actions are justified or actually relate to Martin's character by stating "The stupid bitch deserved it."

Exactly. Any man who hits women knows what he is doing is wrong & does not care.
This film wouldn't *wake* any of them up to how wrong their actions are.

I'd say this cloud is Cumulo Nimbus.
Didn't he discover America?
Penfold, shush.

Yah.... usually there's some serious psychological issues if you're abusing women who are doing nothing wrong like this movie and Unforgivable displayed. A movie isn't going to cure that and make a guy go, "OOOOOH, so THIS is wrong!?" That's why I think all the domestic awareness crap in the NFL and society is stupid. People that are abusive are not going to watch a commercial and be like, "OOOOH, SO I SHOULDN'T HIT MY WIFE?! That makes so much sense!"

reply

Probably not. Abusers don't get it. In their minds they are fine people.

Kittycity is right!

I was in an abusive marriage until early 1997 and this film (and a few books) finally gave me the courage to leave him.
Actually I went with my former husband to the movie theater in 1991/1992 when "Sleeping with the Enemy" was released and he thought it was a pretty good and suspenseful film.
Of course he didn't notice any parallels to our own marriage.
Abusive men live in their own little fantasy world :).

The trouble is: one out of three married men beats up/is verbally abusive to their wives and 50% of all men have affairs, because they are polygamous. And this is not just happening in low class families or middle class families, it happens to highly educated men as well.
So finding a partner who doesn't do either one is quite difficult!
THAT'S why there are so few good men out there.

reply

You probably right, it would be great to hear a guy changing his abusive ways after seeing a movie on a man abusing a woman.

reply

Probably not- they probably wouldn't connect themselves to him, and tell themselves they're 'different' or 'justified' or got 'driven to it' :(

reply

They probably think Martin is the hero of the story, and are shocked when he bites it.

reply

I think abusive men would dismiss seeing the film if they knew about its plot, believing the material as some sort of man-hating propaganda, or they would tell themselves "Hey, at least I'm not as bad as him, I've never kicked her, tried to kill her, always made it up to her" etc and/or believe themselves different and justified in their abuse. That's if they even recognize the parallels.

reply

I doubt men who are wife beaters would watch this or if they did they think they are above and better than the man profiled in any wife-beater movie.

I've had two uncles who beat my aunt almost to death. This was two separate marriages. Both were in their minds above the law and better than anyone else. One uncle would read the paper in the morning and make fun of the criminals who got caught. He called them names and cuss words saying they deserved to get caught because they made mistakes. He never made a mistake in his mind. If he knocked over his coffee it wasn't his fault because he didn't look around the newspaper, it was my aunt's fault for not putting it in the right spot. I could see him actually saying that the husband should have picked a better wife who could be controlled and would listen better.

As someone else stated below men like this live in their own little world. They feel justified for their actions.

reply

I hope your aunt is safe and in a better position now.

reply

I hope abusive men who hit women end up like Martin after watching this
