What was the Nazis plan, again?

"Let's use men flying with rocketpacks to take over the world!" Um...how would that work, exactly? Let's put it this way: lone men on rocketpacks with NO PROTECTION FROM BULLETS, instead of fighters and bombers that have at least some armor? And a guy on a rocketpack might be able to carry maybe one bomb or two, compared to a bomber that carries dozens of bombs. So...how does the whole "using rocketpacks to win the war" thing work, preytell?

I guess if they attacked small towns it'd work. Really, it comes down to movie serial logic. If you watch those old serials from the 30's and 40's the bad guy always has some crazy plan that'd never work in real life.

Yeah, this isn't the worst "take over the world" movie plan I've seen by a longshot.

We have a new enemy. Fluke Skywalker...

Its not as bad as Stromberg's undersea world plan from The Spy Who Loved Me.

Phase 1- Start WWIII

Phase 2- Convince people to live under the sea to avoid war

The same way that paratroopers are used to take over places behind enemy lines.

I'm sure it would have some tactical value, certainly not a war winning super weapon, but under the right circumstances it could be a poor man's air support or a handy way to hit and run things like armored/supply columns or even a way to get commando units in and out of hairy situations. It's a rocket pack, use your imagination. Maybe give them an armored breastplate to give them some protection from small arms (which could be practical since the rocket would carry the added weight). With the huge increase in mobility it would have offered to the average soldier, it fit pretty well into the Blitzkrieg theory the Germans were using. Well, it would have if it were real...

Well said, doughboy. Even the animated film showed what looked to be a ground invasion after some sort of major attack on the capitol. I am sure that the intent was not to just send a bunch of flying soldiers in and win a war. It would have been a part of a much larger plan.

OP, count your blessings. At least the movie didn't feature dinosaurs with rocket packs on their backs causing mayhem like a certain very stupid comic book of recent did!

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I saw this film last night on Netflix, however there's no way those rocket packs would carry enough fuel to travel all the way across the Atlantic as shown in the film. They would have required a ship to transport them as close to the coast as possible, without running into the American defences. Then again it's likely they could have produced a lot more rocket packs than they could planes.

reply

I don't think the animated film was depicting rocket packs making a flight over the Atlantic. It was showing invading forces which most likely would have been a massive assault fleet, from which the rocket packs would be launched as one part of the assault. In any case, it's just a propaganda film to get a point across, not a specific plan.

It would be a great suicide bomber type weapon.

As to your subject Question: What was the Nazis plan, again?

The same as it is every day Pinky... to rule the world.

Nazi foot soldiers = scary. Flying Nazi soldiers = terrifying.

Paratroopers served a very strategical purpose in the war. Now imagine, instead of floating down slowly and aimlessly, the paratroopers have full control to fly to specific locations.

reply

What if we could equip Navy Seals or Delta ops with those packs? Imagine the possibilities.

I think it was more a case of, if the Americans have it, then we want to get our hands on it too.

The Krauts may not have had any plans for it (propaganda film notwithstanding). It was just American military technology that they wanted to know about.

Are you kidding? You have any idea what kind of crazy advantage a flying infantry division would be? They would no longer need roads or transport. Rivers, mountains, forests, swamps and lakes would no longer be an obstacle. They could LITERALLY plan attack vectors "as the crow flies" from any direction and they can get anywhere almost immediately. The logistics advantage alone is ridiculous.

Stop thinking of using the jet packs like a B-52 and start thinking of using them like a paratroop force -- useful for infiltration, reconnaissance, sneaking behind enemy lines and flanking from any and every angle. When your standard foot soldier is no longer bottlenecked by terrain or mobility, the possibilities are endless.

In terms of logic and physics, using jetpacks to conquer the world isn't the worst of this movie's problems. Rather, there's the problem of burning the back of your legs (and pants) every time you fly.

reply

For that to work, the technology would have to be vastly improved over what it is today.

Yes, they actually developed one. If you don't believe me, check it out on YouTube.

The prototype at the time, early 60's, could only carry a man for about 100 yards. Actually, the flame came out below the feet, so getting burned wasn't an issue.

But even more flexible, since the jetpacks aren't gone after you drop.

You want to send the different platoons in a company to go after different objectives? It's a lot easier when each soldier is individually mobile. You need to reinforce one of the flanks in your attack? Jetpacks will get them there a lot sooner.

If you've ever read Heinlein's Starship Troopers, it's not just the armor and firepower that gives the M.I. its edge... it's also the mobility of each individual soldier.

That and the genocide of anyone not of the father race.

While the bumbling part is exaggerated, they're otherwise pretty fair assessments actually.
