Is Spielberg making a statement about himself?

Peter gives up the adventure and of being a boy so he can grow up and finally be an adult. If you look at Spielberg’s filmography up to this point, he made mostly fun, childlike films (eg ET, Raiders, Goonies) up until the mid-‘80s when he transitioned to doing deeply serious films for adults such as The Color Purple and Empire of the Sun. Was this film almost like Spielberg addressing how he lost his childlike charm and this film is his attempt to return to form just as Peter returns to his former self.

Empire of the Sun and The Color Purple came before Hook, and after Hook he made The BFG, Tintin, West Side Story, Dial of Destiny and Ready Player One.

So...no.

I think so. I think that's why he doesn't like Hook, because of how it reflects a certain unhappy/uncertain time in his life.
