What ethnicity is Gomez?

To me it seems something between Cossack or Russian and Spanish/Moroccan Muslim -- honour bound, old world, sinister. I wonder if it personifies the Visagoth (Gothic) or Scythian culture.

I like it; it reflects Victorian and Gothic -- any observations/ opinions?

I would guess Cossack, Gomez mentions their Cossack relatives before the "Mamushka" dance:

"The Mamushka. Taught to us by our Cossack cousins, the Mamushka has been an Addams family tradition since God knows when. We danced the Mamushka while Nero fiddled…we danced the Mamushka at Waterloo…we danced the Mamushka for Jack the Ripper. And now, Fester Addams- this Mamushka is for you!"

I'm pretty sure it's mentioned either in one of the movies or on the show that he's of Castillion extraction. Hence the mustache and the fencing and all that.

It is mentioned many times that he is Castilian. His ancestors come from Spain and speak Castilian Spanish which is the mother tongue of 40 million.

I am guessing the OP has never seen the original Addams Family because it is made crystal clear on an almost every episode basis. In "Morticia's Dilemma", old family friends who hung out with Gomez's grandfather come over from Spain. "That sets my Spanish blood afire", "That sets my Castilian blood afire" are said by Gomez many times and Morticia says something about his Castilian blood. They tango, play pretend Spanish style bull fighting in the living room. Also "Ole" is said quite a bit.

Gomez's pet names for Tish, "Cara mia" is Italian but also Spanish meaning "my face", and "Querida" is Spanish, a few translations can be found but most common is "beloved".

I am replying here since this person has completely missing the point. And sorry to resurrect a 9-year post.

"Cara Mia" is Italian for "My Beloved." He does not say this because he has Spanish blood. "Cara Mia" is not related at all to a romantic response. He says "Cara Mia" whenever he responds romantically to her French muttering. "Querida" is Spanish, but cannot but not be connected in any way to "Cara."

So Miss_Georgia, you missed it completely!

The mustache and cigar are just staples from men back in the 1920s & 30s where Gomez is clearly extracted from - the Latin heart throb who played various exotic ethnic groups to woo women into mortal sin.

reply

Not Cossack. Gomez said they had Cossack cousins.

reply

Cossack is not an ethnicity. Addams is an old English name.

I assumed he was Spanish, like from Spain, due to his name. You are actually close with the Spanish/Moorish/Gothic ancestry because Wikipedia states:

The Visigoths under Alaric I sacked Rome in 410, defeated Attila at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains in 451, and founded a kingdom in Aquitaine. The Visigoths were pushed to Hispania (Spain/Portugal) by the Franks following the Battle of Vouillé in 507. By the late sixth century, the Visigoths had converted to Catholicism. They were conquered in the early eighth century by the Muslim Moors, but began to regain control under the leadership of the Visigothic nobleman Pelagius, whose victory at the Battle of Covadonga began the centuries-long Reconquista. The Visigoths founded the Kingdom of Asturias, which eventually evolved into modern Spain and Portugal.[7]

Since when has Addams been a Spanish name?

I realise that in the TV show there are references to Spain, but not so in the movie.

reply

Addams is Morticia's last name, not Gomez's. I guess they all took her name.

reply

Wasn't Morticia's last name Frump? At least it was in the TV show.

reply

Maybe Gomez's mother is Spanish and his father is English?

reply

He is an Addams.

Can't stop the signal.

reply

cossack cousins are cousins. doesn't mean gomez and fester are, there are several branches of family from different areas

reply

My guess is that he is Gypsy. That would explain cossack/Russian connection.

reply

Why do you equate Spaniards with Moroccan Muslims?

reply

He pooped in his hair

reply

Why does he speak Italian so much in this movie? I barely heard him speak Spanish if at all.
