After watching the film over and over again (especially the last scenes), I think Tom is a homosexual. I think Tom is disappointed, not because Leo got Verna but the other way around(Verna got Leo)

Maybe Tom and Bernie were an old pair like Dane and Mink. And Tom finds out Bernie's running around with Mink, before the film begins.
