The Chemist Guy is Jesus?

So everything weird that happened can mostly be chalked up to Jacob's hallucinations and battle between heaven and hell, sure. But the whole "bad trip" thing in 'nam was real. So did he really hallucinate the real chemist guy who gave him the proper explanation? Or was that guy like Jesus who saved his life and then showed him the truth? Or something else equally rooted in nonsense?

I choose to inerpet it in that way. not nessasrliy Jesus but perhaps an angel of guidance or positive energy directing him to the truth. Also the little caption about experimentation by the army on soldiers hints to us that we are to take that as an explaination of what turly happend there fore helping Jacob find peace.

Umm..What movie were you watching.

I'm not sure where you get Jesus from, it isn't as though the chemist willingly sacrificed his life for the sake of Jacob. If anything, the chemist is more like Virgil guiding Dante through Hell and Purgatory.

Just a guess, but since his name was Michael, I assumed he represents the Archangel Michael, who leads the forces of good against the forces of evil in the Book of Revelations.

The writer, Bruce Joel Rubin, also wrote Ghost. He tends to be spiritual without being overtly religious. I suspect we’re supposed to think that as Jacob shuffles off this mortal coil he is less bound by the parameters of physical and temporal existence, affording him an expanded awareness.

Either that or it’s all a meaningless hallucination, but I doubt they would include such a long and important sequence if it was just Jacob’s subconscious doing pointless somersaults.

i highly doubt it.

I thought Jacob's entire life after being shot in Vietnam was a hallucination or some kind of spiritual experience as he struggled to accept his death, which then allowed him to move on. Nothing from that point forward was as it seemed. All the people he met were angels, demons, or spirits of some kind.
