Sofia Coppola or Winona Ryder?

We know that Coppola originally wanted to cast Winona as the daughter, but she couldn't do it because she was busy with Edward Scissorhands. And we all know that Sofia was simply a bad case of nepotism, as her terrible acting was the one big dent in an otherwise, in my opinion, excellent film. But the more I watch it, the more I think Winona would have been a mistake too. I mean, her acting would have been better, but I just don't think she'd have had the right look and style for the picture.

at least Wynona would be easier on the eyes, then again this train wreck was pretty much unsavable

Winona Ryder... she's a very good actor, was eventually nominated Oscars and Golden Globes... she's been a part of bad movies, but so far I have never seen her acting badly even on those not so good movies.

In honor of Winona Ryder‘s birthday, we’re looking at one of the actress’ biggest missed opportunities. Originally, Ryder was supposed to appear in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Godfather Part III which was released in 1990. But Ryder dropped out of the picture at the last-minute citing exhaustion (or something – accounts are vague and sometimes contradictory). The role was eventually played by Coppola’s daughter, Sofia, who proved that as an actress, she makes a great director.

Many claim that Sofia Coppola’s stiff performance in a key role ruined the ending of the beloved trilogy. I don’t know about all that. The third movie in the series had flaws that had nothing to do with Sofia’s performance. But there’s no denying that an actress of Ryder’s caliber would have been an improvement.

For me, the Godfather 3 is hurt by poor story structure and plot.

It's basically a retread of Part 1 & 2 where we see the cycle of the Corleone machine doing it's thing all over again and at the expense of younger Corleone family members.

Coppola and Puzo should have worked harder and been more creative with the idea of Michael seeking redemption for the family name. He could have just liquidated all of the family assets and allowed the Joey Zazzas, Don Altobellos, and the other New York families to divide up what he no longer needed. Better yet, instead of going that route they should have just made Michael thrice as ruthless as he was in Part 2 and go for the jugular. Instead, Puzo cheated his own original story and turned Sonny's bastard son from an aborted fetus to a long lost bastard who wants "in" on the family business.

Wynona being cast wouldn't have made the movie better for me at all.

Winona would have been a much better choice

Winona hands down. Had she and Duvall been in the picture it would be a lot better. True there were still story problems, but I definitely believe we would have a finer film.

Even Coppola agrees with this.

They should have paid Robert Duvall and Winona Ryder what they deserved.

Sofia was the worst possible choice.

You know why Coppola did it ?

Because he had serious money problems and the role of Mary was a good additional pay check

for the Coppolas…

It's a shame, the film could have been great.

But without a convincing heart of the story (Mary) and the old brain (Tom Hagen), something is missing.
