Great movie but could have done without the 'BLASPHEMER!' scene

I absolutely love Uncle Buck but the scene where the teacher yells out "BLASPHEMER" was very jarring and outlandish, as a kid I used to be creeped out by that scene, also is it just me or did Maisy's teacher look creepy?

reply

That was inserted to show how harsh the teachers were in reference to Maisy. Note it was right in the middle of the Asst principal scene.

I thought the scene was supposed to emphasize that Buck’s language (“that damn dryer”) was so jarring to the people in this town

reply

I agree, but only because I thought the scene was stupid and unfunny.

reply

Yeah, it seemed harsh just cropping up like that. I wondered if there was more to the scene but it ended up on the cutting room floor.

reply

I wonder how Buck would have felt if he happened to have heard the teacher say "BLASPHEMER!" to Maisy?

reply

Well it's a family film so he couldn't just defenestrate him. How about lock him in a cupboard with the vice principle and let the scandal ensue?

reply

So God was still allowed in schools back then? I can't imagine any teacher caring about blasphemy these days. Although I would be good if they did.

Agreed. Terrible scene. Should have gone in the edit.

reply

I've never found the blasphemer scene to be all that funny either.

reply

What was that?!?
Agree, creepy and unnecessary.

reply

Thought it was hilarious.
