This movie is just a cheap knock-off of Carrie.

Seriously. If I wanted to watch a high school chick flick about getting murderous revenge on the popular kids and being misunderstood by the staff as well as the parents, done in a much better and more interesting way, I would watch Carrie, which already came out thirteen years earlier.

I don't understand how no one has made the comparison. Yes, Heathers is Black Comedy, while Carrie is Horror, but watching Carrie today it could definitely pass for a Black Comedy.

reply

I don't think they are very similar at all.

reply

Agree, they're both about the awfulness of high school kids, but the similarity ends there.

reply

Plus I've only seen Carrie once or twice. I've seen Heathers more times than I can count. Heathers to me is a much more enjoyable movie.

reply

Carrie has better characters, plot, and murders.

reply

Yeah that's cool. I'm just saying I prefer Heathers. But I consider them very different movies, so that's where I disagree with you.

reply

That's like saying Ghostbusters is a knock-off of The Shining because they both feature evil ghosts.

Sure, both Heathers and Carrie feature bitchy high school girls meeting grisly ends, but one is clearly teen satire and one straight out horror. I don't think there's a movie database in the world that would file Carrie under Black Comedy.

You're deluding yourself if you think that any scene featuring Piper Laurie isn't Black Comedy. And that's neither a byproduct of watching the film today nor my personal thoughts, because even Piper herself said she initially thought the film was Black Comedy, and sure enough, her acting fit the bill.

One man's delusion is another's truth. Why so narky joey? It's ok if we disagree.

I have known religious zealots and while Laurie certainly does amp it up to 11, she also portrays a scarily accurate victim of Hyperreligiosity. No, I didn't find it funny at all, I thought it was an extremely disturbing performance actually.

reply

Maybe, but to your initial point, yes, I feel as though Heather Chandler's death was similar to Chris Hargensen's, and J.D.'s response of attempted bombing after losing Veronica, the only person who understood him, is all too similar to Carrie's burning of the school when Tommy died and everyone laughed at her.

reply

Hmmm...I love Carrie and I love Heathers, but I really don't see them as being the same. I mean I think every teen movie is about being misunderstood.
