Why’d that kid keep calling himself “LaWanda”?

Didn’t Kathy Bate’s character in Fried Green Tomatoes run around calling herself “LaWanda” too?

What were they playing at?

Nuwanda, it's just a pretentious sounding name that sounds (for the boys at least) kind of tribal and mysterious. I don't think it has a specific meaning other than Charlie embracing the Carpe Diem thing to the pretentious extreme.

Pretentious? Wasn’t Nuwanda Napoleon Dynamite’s brother’s girlfriend’s name? She seemed quite humble. She traveled by bus.
