Things I or you have noticed in the background??

This is one of my all time fav movies ever since I was a kid and watched this in 1990 at aged 8. I have watched this countless times since and have just bought and watched this on dvd so I can watch this on the big screen. I still have it on videotape and I have just heard that it will be out on blu-ray in July so I may have to buy a blu-ray player just for that film.

But anyway I have watched this so many times over 50, sad I know but has anyone only just or has recently noticed things in the background. I only just noticed the other day when watching....

1. the scene early on when Art is eating breakfast at the petersons and he grabs some food out of a bowl from Carol without her noticing and he clearly doesnt like what he tastes ... seconds later in the background we see carol with the bowl lay it on the floor for vince the dog.

Also I heard that apparantly Mark Rumsfield was packing a knife when he went to the Klopeks house ... lol ... I never even noticed or saw that.

I'm sure I will notice other stuff later but what have you noticed??? I'm curious.

Cereals: Gremlins and Freakies.

Flies buzzing around every time Hans makes an appearance.

The funny way Rumsfield carries the brownies on his fingertips and over his head, like a head waiter or something.

Hans doesn't seem to object to the dirt on the brownies; but he does give them a good sniff. I guess if he liked how the smelled he'd still eat them.

Uncle Reuben only seems to target Ray with his intense stares.

After Art falls into the backyard he tells the boys to toss the tools over. Which they do and they hit Art which makes the boys laugh histerically.

"Sure was damp today."

All the items in the Klopek's house, the boxes of things actually belong to the Knapp's but the neighbor's wouldn't know that because they were never in there when the Knapp's were alive.

When Werner Klopek starts up the basement stairs his shadow gets larger and larger with each step until he comes around the corner and it's itty bitty Henry Gibson.

OH, when Art is outside the basement window of the Klopek's digging around he finds a plastic comb in the dirt. He runs his fingernail along the teeth, shrugs and puts it in his pocket. Nothing is sacred or off limits to Art except going with his wife to see her mother/sister.

You can even hear the flies around Hans when they do the closeup at the table with the candle bonfire.

Oh, how about Art's body outline 'punched' into the roof of the shed he fell through?

reply

The klopecks have citizen Kane's sled"rosebud" in their basement.
Why does ray's dog always get shotgun over his son?

reply

I know why you'd do that. If the dog is constantly slurping the person in from of them. Maybe he did that to the son before filming began.

I LOVE the way Mr. Rumsfield carries the brownies! Makes me laugh every time.

In the same scene where Art eats the dog food, he gets up from his chair, takes the syrup bottle that he emptied and puts it back into the fridge.

reply

And takes out a fresh new bottle of syrup and an entire pineapple!

reply

Always found this super funny

When Ray has his dream. The devil worshipers in the background are chanting what Art said earlier. "I want to kill everyone, Satan is good, Satan is our pal."

John Hancock

When the neighbours enter Walter's house to investigate his disappearance, there's a photograph of him with Lucille Ball. A very nice homage to Gale Gordon's earlier work. Kudos to you Mr Dante!

reply

When Ray picks up the chair during his "it's us, not them" speech, and throws it, you can hear the sound of glass breaking in the background, implying that he uncaringly threw the chair into the window of a car.

Aw. Now that wasn't very nice of you, was it? The OP just wanted to start up a conversation regarding a film he loves. We were having fun with it. But, nooo...oh. You have to come along with your sniper-silhouette avatar and comments all snipey and try to ruin it for the rest of us. Well, it just ain't gonna happen, because we love the film, so there! See? I can be childish and snipey, too.

It's entirely possible that I am missing the point of your message.

reply

While you are Ten-Inch-Toni, who is to say what the sniper silhouette above is trying to make up for?

Mr Frampton, vis-a-vis your rump

reply

yeah 50 times over the 24 year period. most of the things people have listed in replies I already knew. the dog food being laid by carol and the knife in Mark's pocket I never saw until recently so what else am I missing is the point.

reply

The trash they dumped in the middle of the street is still there the next day. lol

reply

Rumsfield peeling the wallpaper off and then trying to put it back.

Art finishing Ray's breakfast. Then he gets into the fridge and comes out with a slab of beef ribs and a whole pineapple. Who the hell has a pineapple in their fridge and why would Art want to try to eat it?

Art's bowling shirts, both of which have "Art" monogrammed over the pocket.

Rumsfield saying, "You keep a horse in your basement?!!"

The trumpet notes from "Patton" playing on the soundtrack every time Rumsfield enters a scene.

"Beethoven had his critics too, Keith. See if you can name three of 'em."

reply

Ricky jerking off the paint brush while hitting on Rumsfeld's wife.

The noise from the Klopeks basement is noticed by everyone on the street but nobody ever calls the cops to investigate.

The fact that Walter would make sure his mail was taken care of but not the dog.

Walter trusted the creepy family living in the scary house to get his mail but none of his other neighbors to do it.

Rumsfeld's wife completely disappears from the movie after their visit with the Klopeks.

Ricky would rather watch three grown men stare at the creepy guy across the street than go to a movie with his hot-as-hell girlfriend.

When burying the bones of the people you killed it's always best to do it right under the fence you are sharing with your suspicious neighbor.

And later she says: "Art, your wife is home"!

edit: I watched it again and she's actually in quite a few shots after the house explodes.

reply

After finding what they think is Walter buried under the fence, Art points the bone he is holding at Rumsfield's wife when talking to her.

Rumsfeld's wife says: "Oh, won't it be nice to have a doctor in the neighborhood?" and the clock immediately goes " Cuckoo, Cuckoo!"

The way ray shuffle slides down the steps after emerging from the blown-up house.
