didnt find this funny, am i weird?

is it just me or is this another one of those films where the premise is funnier than the actual film. i didnt laugh once and i know my comedy and this certainly wasnt it. am i unusual in thinking that this is just not funny?

Comedy is subjective. What you find funny doesn't mean someone else will find funny. It doesn't make you weird - you just didn't laugh. Personally I think this is a comic masterpiece with a terrific script.

Agreed here. There are parts of this that make this a simple, lighthearted comedy but there are parts that I still crack up side-splitting laugh at after all these years. The mailman coming to the potential new owners kills me every time with his laugh....

I think the film is much funnier than the premise. In fact, the premise is unremarkable. Could you please be more specific?

reply

I don't think it's a gut buster by any means but I really like the movie.

Funny thing. When I saw it in the theaters, I had the same reaction. But watching it again on cable I enjoyed it more. Maybe because in the theaters nobody laughed.

reply

No, it's not just you. I did not find this movie to be funny either.

I agree with you Zorina. Parts were hilarious like the boat scene and the screw ups in the house. As you said it's not as good as Vacation but still good.

So OP you are weird!

Hmmm I enjoyed this movie, but to be honest, it's the least funniest movie I've seen Chevy Chase in. So far I've seen a bunch of his films, and most of them I always laugh throughout the film... but it seems like they watered him down in this film, he didn't seem AS FUNNY as he usually is.

Maybe that's why some people don't find it as funny as they thought... but to me I think it had to do with Chevy not being as crazy as he usually is.

The funniest moment of his in this film for me, is when he throws his book in the fireplace and goes "It's burning... it's burning....... SH*T!!!!!!"

It's a horrible un-funny film.
It suffers from a lack of balance. Chevy started to become annoying with his antics without anyone to react to his weirdness.
As with the Vacation films, you always have to have someone ground the story with someone that's relatable. Madolyn Smith was too upscale for the average Joe to even care, so she was a poor "straightman."

You can be weird if you want, it's ok. It's better to be weird than to be a conformist people-pleaser that is well-adjusted to a thoroughly sick world.

This movie is sort of nasty and boring more than funny. It has some interesting and funny moments, but for the most part, it's a simp that's betrayed by an evil hag - very realistic, happens a lot in real life.

In my opinion, this movie doesn't work on any level. The only good thing about it is that it has some great 1980s atmosphere, and that's about it.

Chevy Chase did many kinds of things, from great classics, like Fletch to mediocre 'I don't know what to think about it' unfunny things like 'Memoirs of an Invisible Man' (or was it 'the'?), that's based on a really badly-written waiting room trash novel, to this kind of attempts to cash-in on his fame.

The best Chevy Chase movie has to be 'National Lampoon's Vacation', of course. THAT movie just works, especially because it's funny. This one doesn't, and isn't.

I like this movie but for me, it never really becomes funny because it so often veers into being annoying.
