How did John know Hans was using a fake name?
Or was he just playing the odds?

reply

He recognized Hans's voice.

Die Hard's screenplay is so wonderful.

John is definitely not playing the odds.

As he mentions to the man he talks to in the plane in the movie's very fist scene:
"I've been doing this for eleven years".

As a veteran police officer involved in such a situation John knows he cannot trust NO ONE.

John's not 100% sure since he's using intuition... but his spidey senses are probably going all over the map lol.

He makes Hans think he's gained his trust by giving him the gun and providing *some* personal information (without putting Holly into danger). But not enough to actually hurt him (like an actual loaded gun nor telling Hans that his wife is also among the kidnapped people, asking if he knows Holly since they are supposed to be co-workers, etc).
